Adding telemetry data to videos

The situation is that my wife recently bought me a GoPro. The hero 4 session one. Flipping nice little thing and incredibly small and light. So I took it for a ride this weekend and it works like a charm. Then I thought to myself, "Hmm I wonder if it is possible to add my speed etc. as an overlay?"

Solution is

Basically you can add in telemetry data from your Garmin into any video. Syncing it is an issue though. So the one guy came up with a solution to at the start of the ride, when the video is first started, ride in a circle. it gives you a point at which to sync the gps data and video.

Pretty easy to do though.Hope this helps someone out.

Garmin Virb does this, all the info is automatically placed on right hand side of screen, including heart rate, etc.

Indeed the Virb does this by default, but for those of us who would rather have a GoPro it is a solution that might help some who want similar results without spending a couple of K to buy a virb just for cycling.

You can download the VIRB software free from Garmin. As long as you sync your footage with the Garmin data, you good to go.

RE Dashware, I find it really clunky and not user-friendly at all, VIRB beats it hands down (IMHO). GoPro need to up their game now that they have GPS in the 5...at the moment is pretty useless but talk is that they may support data integration via firmware updates. That would mean re-writing either Dashware or GoPro Studio to make it easy to use with GPS data.

Quick question, what do you guys reckon for a camera for cycling (and life): gopro or virb or x?

Two things:

1. Budget

2. Time and patience to edit...

The rest is personal preference/brand loyalty, each type has its pro's and cons...

Haha thanks, I've read DC Rainmaker and like you said, was more confused afterwards [emoji1]

In terms of budget, I was more thinking that which one has more value for money (same price same value)?

I don't care about brand and that's why I'm a bit skeptical of GoPro, because they have a big brand/marketing. But I guess Garmin also aarrgghh

Garmin Virb editing suite. Works great.

the only wrinkle I have with my Virb is that long rides are split into 4GB files... Clearly, there's some technical reason for that. But when you add the telemetry, it starts each file from 0km... even if that's your 100th... likely a way to figure it out. For me, it's not that serious.

What's the battery life you guys get with gopro and virb? They seem to specify about 2h, but actual seems to be just more than an hour according to reviews?

Ohhh hot topic!! Be prepared to have multiple spares and even an external for long rides (depending on your SD card size). Battery life varies according to a lot of factors (FPS, resolution, WiFi, use of LCD screen etc etc) but generally I get about 1hr 50 with the standard GP battery in a GP4 Black running 1080 @ 120fps with no wifi. Still trying out the 5. I believe the Garmin Virb Ultra is about the same, whatever the case, you will end up with 2 or 3 spare batteries and a dual charger...

Both the same price (VIRB Ultra 30 and GoPro 5)....if you coming from a GoPro environment, then all the fittings and mounts can be used with the Garmin. Garmin needs a case for submersion, included in kit. GPS data utilisation for Garmin more mature and from that POV, more bang for buck. If you saw DCRainmakers site, you will see how similar they are. Don't have a VIRB (yet  ) so can't tell you how it performs in the real world, which is really the only test you need to consider...your own experience with the product...if a mate has one, borrow it for a bit cause there are a lot of reviews out there but so far each of them has been different to my own experience....some good some bad.

Tata ma chance!

45 mins on my GoPro 3 Black, but with a powerbank, I can get up to 3.5 hours.

I shoot in 1080p 30f/s as that is the highest resolution possible to view on the phone app.

I normally have a 16GB card, and rotate about 2-3 depending on when and where I use it. With bigger cards, you risk losing all footage if something goes wrong with the card.
