Bicycle insurance is only as good as the policy document, there are no quick answers, you will have to decide what you are willing to live with.

Personally I have had great experiences with santam, and the bicycle being a specified item on my house insurance.

I think Miway actually offers comprehensive bicycle insurance. Other than their main competitors they actually have a product specifically tailored to the needs of cyclists. What's covered: accidental damage, theft, etc. on the way to, during and on the way back from training rides and races. Give them a shot and ask for a quote.

You obviously haven't read the threads on Miway.

I vote against MIway ..

I increased my Household insurance to include the value of my bikes if stolen from in the house. According to the agent who happily upped my premiums , there was no problem they are covered. On speaking to a second consultant just to get a price to insure the bike for out and about , I was quoted R700+ per month for one (I threw up in my mouth a little) .. I declined politely , and just double checked if they would still be covered if stolen from in the house only to be told no..

So will they be covered if stolen from in the house under my household insurance ?? I've been told yes by one employee and no by another... take a guess which one they will pick if heaven forbid I need to claim.. (or should I say, WHEN I need to claim ) .. I promptly cancelled all my policies with mi way and moved to discovery where I pay a higher premium but have been assured my bikes are covered

I dont trust these selfhelp companies. Im with a broker and they use mutual and federal. Im paying r75 extra for my silverback sola 4. Comprehensive cover.

Most companies I contacted only offer it in addition to other insurance.

Unfortunately I cannot take out other insurance yet and only need to take out bicycle insurance

Not sure about your particular scenario. I would however think that the consultant advising you that your bikes aren't covered for theft whilst in the house, must have been incompetent (trust call Centre agents to confuse the cr@p out of you [emoji849]). I don't have household insurance with Miway but only bike insurance (MiMovables). Paying roughly R350 for insured value of R40000. Claimed once and had no hassles.

I'm with Discovery and so far so good. Premiums are about R280 pm for 3 bikes of approx R100k. Claimed a couple of months ago for bikes stolen out of my garage without any hassles

You are quite right about the incompetency !! But they have a phone recording of an agent telling me that are not covered . I can almost guarantee that will get dragged up when I try claim for xxxk worth of stolen bikes . I don't really have anything else worth steeling in here ..
