Killer day again for Sky. Distancing more in 2 days of bruce-bonus winds for Bernal and Kwaito.

Apparently Meintjes was unable to catch up because he was forced to stop after a crash.

Cavendish just stopped

Not looking good at all for Dimension Data.

I didn't watch y'day so apologies if this is out of place...

But WTF is up with this? Isn't it these peoples jobs to ride? How can you just stop because you're what... over it? tired? losing overall time?

come on man. do your job.

I read today on the official website of the team that Meintjes was injured in the crash and as a result did not make the cut off for the stage. At the time of writing they did not know how bad the injury was as he still needed to be assessed by medical staff.

They also mentioned that Cavendish was forced to stop on the back of 2 challenging days and previous hard races as he is still working his way back to full fitness after his long lay off due to illness.

It is. They do and pretty much guaranteed none of them quit if they have an option. Check Cav’ in last years tour. Also it’s early season in preparation races for leaders with goals and training g programs aimed at events (like the tour) that will define their year and the success of the team to sponsors, public and beyond. Most are building and not expecting any performance at this stage.

Ja look I accept I was overzealous there, injuries.. fair enough. I also know cyclists are usually tough as nails. I mean whatshisname from EF last year was laughable at all his falls and injuries in a single race.

these guys have one of the best jobs in the world so I just get frustrated when I read things as I thought earlier.

Saying that I'm not so sold about the idea of using a legit race as training though. Thats a big deal for a lot of people. Yes you can be the best in the world, and its a great occasion to test and train yourself in real life scenario, but don't come and half arse/drop out when you're done with your own agenda. You're ruining potentially a big event for someone else who is on a different path/time in their career.

Edit: our Texan friend, Craddock, it just came to me

Of course pro's need racing to prep'. They are on training trajectories and have set goals that their season are based around. Even Sagan can't be on it from start to finish of a season. I'm guessing the Tour is the biggest goal for both LM and Cavendish and if they get the wins there, give the team the limelight they need and glory the sponsors desire then a DNF in Paris Nice will soon play into the background.

Some of the best training for racing is... racing. Read some of the Chad Haga blog posts from a few years back when he started his season late despite training well in the off season. The kicking he got from those races because he wasn't race ready was hilarious. Of course they will try but if it could damage the longer term goals and the management of their year it's not going to happen.

Don't also discount the fact that organisers and sponsors want the famous riders at their races and teams need exposure to give back to sponsors investment regardless of their condition, performance expectations and more. Remember when Quickstep brought Cavendish out for the Argus and him and Renshaw got sick impacting his training for MSR. There were some 'diplomatic' quotes around the need for Lefevere to ship him to SA to satisfy the owner of Klein Constantia.

Damm that tummy bug sure did effect Sagan... he is going to need some.burgers to fatten him up a bit.. noticeably skinnier.

Maybe he is transitioning towards a GC contender...

(Joking... But how cool would it be if he does decide to make the transition?)

Yep, can see that point.

Multiple Single Day event wins throughout a year and Stage wins somehow feel more rewarding than only getting recognition for your effort after the last day of a 3 week tour.

Plus I like his current style, don't want to reign him in to sit slip of Daniel Oss for 3 weeks...
