Please try confirm the following as soon as possible:

Start venue;

Start time;

Riding along which road(s) to the site;

And then back to the start, or somewhere else?

I can then let the Road Rangers know, so they can get a few guys to attend.

I am vehicle bound and cannot ride, so if you need transport for the bike behind the group, i will gladly assist.

How long do we want the ride to be? There are a couple of options along HP for cars to park at shopping centres.

There is retail crossing where virgin active is, then ride along HP to the site. ( should be about 5kms) then from there straight on HP to cradlestone where the route can either go right on to N14 and on to bidon or straight over the N14 to laurentia farm and then right into the cradle and on to Bidon.

Alternatively, after the bike is placed we all desperse and one would be free to decide how to complete the ride.

I understand Gerald's need to get the route to the rangers asap.

Can we get some input on route suggestions and distance or a plan of action?

Suggestions thus far have been to ride from bidon to the ghost bike site and back.

I think the bike should be placed as quietly as possible to prevent pushback from over enthusiastic public servants....

Place first then visit later as a group or individuals - I suggest asking the family what they prefer in terms of fanfare or not - and simply abide by their wishes.

Agree with V12, if you don't draw attention to its placement it will go unnoticed by over enthusiastic government officials. They can also not fine or prosecute those involved as no one will know who placed it....

Yes, the bike plant needs to be a stealth operation. Draw as little attention as possible. Needs to almost look sanctioned. Wearing similar kit to what the local council crew do, is a winning combo! Neil, are you sorted for the day of the bike plant as far as resources to get bike and materials there, mix dugga, etc?

The Memorial ride should happen after this is in place. Current dates work well. Plant happens on the 10th and Memorial ride the day after on the 11th.

Hi all

I still marvel at the response of this community, many of whom never met my brother.

My sister wanted to visit the site of the accident after the memorial service. She followed us with my mom and step dad in the car. My mom really took a knock seeing his blood still there on the road. She wept from the inside of her whole being. Very painful for her.

I pin dropped the spot while we were there. https://goo.gl/maps/XeckJiz2z3x

The word "cyclist" is still on the road in spray paint. This memorial will give identity to "cyclist". As a family we appreciate it. I would hope that it would do more than that by raising motorist awareness by making it closer to home and more personal by giving a name to "the unknown soldier" so to speak.

Perhaps it may also provoke better compliance to cycling etiquette by those cyclists whom many refer to as "Lycrans"

At the very least, it is an honorable gesture for an honourable man.

10th and 11th are good dates. I will follow the thread as details unfold, but I would say that the more attention drawn to the memorial ride to the site of the memorial, the greater the impact on passing motorists.

Again, thank you to you all.

From Bidon Bistro to the spot that Anthony shared it is 12 - 13 km. (Going the Riverstone, N14 pass Cradlestone then turning left into HP)

I think it is a good venue to start.

I should be in for the 11th (just need to move some stuff). I'm travelling this week and can't help organise too much, so please accept this as my contribution.

Route and other thoughts:

1. Clearly and tragically, HP is a dangerous road, so to ensure as much protection for those riding, I believe we need an escort, Road Ranger or otherwise, for all times on HP (at the very least). Also being early (presumably) on a Sunday should help in this regard. So a meeting point on HP and then a ride to Bidon to disperse thereafter will leave those cycling back to the HP meeting point exposed. Perhaps best starting & finishing at Bidon, with escort to/from the memorial site. We've just got to ride considerately on the N14 particularly.

2. As Hacc suggested, route out: Bidon, Riverstone, N14 pass Cradlestone then turning left into HP. I propose the return is as suggested by Rocknrolla: HP to cradlestone, straight over the N14 to laurentia farm and then right into the cradle and on to Bidon. (This will avoid the RH turn at Cradlestone onto the N14 which will be difficult for us to do safely and considerately.)

3. Does anyone know the 'rules-of-engagement' that the Road Rangers operate under? Clearly they aren't JMPD and we don't want to operate inconsiderately or illegally on the ride, so what can we expect/request?

4. Start time, earlier the better so that traffic is light. Suggest leaving Bidon at 0630. We should be at the memorial site around 0700-0715 at a very easy pace. Depart for Bidon around 0730-0745, to arrive 0800-0830? Thoughts?

5. Lastly, I suggest black arm-bands as a mark of respect (black electrical tape will be fine). Left arm sleeve.

Thoughts? Additions, deletions?

Edit: does anyone know which side of the road the ghost bike will be? We have to give some thought to turning around, and gathering, safely?

Not sure how accurate Google Maps is, but it looks like it is the left-hand side coming from CradleStone towards Peter Road.

Good questions posed, and I like the idea of the black armbands - if somebody has extra they could possibly bring along for late additions or those who don't have?

I like the idea of the 07:00 start as Bidon is about 40km from my house, so can ride there and back (if anybody wants to join me, I'm coming from Midrand)

Earlier rather than later on Sunday morning. Try to keep the cycling gear near to black (?) - not to miserable but maybe it will be more visual for passers by.

I hear you re memorial black, but I think safety of participants, and a be-seen message, might be better served with hi-viz clothing? Don't forget some people may be cycling to/from the start venue and they might be better servied with hi-viz, or whatever they normally wear?
