Your next road bike: disc or caliper brake

Would you consider buying a road frame with disc brakes?

Would the extra weight associated with disc swing your vote to a caliper brake frame?

Is it better to wait till the UCI finalizes its decision on the use of disc brakes?

The market is really pushing hard with bike manufacturers launching more and more disc frame models and Shimano leading the way with road discbrake groupsets becoming more popular.

Recently had a bike from Specialized with discs on

Did two races with it,

Can't say the braking power was any better than my normal bikes brakes

I did note a bit more catching of the disc with time..where as my normal brakes do not catch at all

I supposed I would eventually switch,I would wait for the technology to develop a bit though before I make the move...

Disc brakes mean you can run wider rims, thus bigger volume tires and get the benefit of less rolling resistance.

 

It also means rims can be built lighter/stiffer as they no longer need a heat resistant braking surface.

 

The benefits are huge as long as you do it properly.

 

It isn't so much the braking power (although in the wet it is awesome compared to rim brakes), there are quite a few other benefits.

 

Still not sure the avg cyclist needs to shell out for all the schmanyness... but zeitgeist

Seeing as I ride for fun, UCI won't bother me much... so yes, please, one order of discs please!!

the industry really pushed 27.5 in mtb and Di on the road to name one of many things they suddenly decided we all need :ph34r:

I have plenty of money sunk into my present bike and wheels (which are wide enough I think) and im certainly not going to rush out and spend $$$ just for the industries latest flavor of the month

 

when the frames are coming up second hand one day and the prices start to bottom out ill think about it ^_^

As any bike you buy now will probably be used for 3+ years, and at the rate of change/rules... I'd push for disc.

 

As discs are so much better in wet, and thats especially whereto want good breaking, I'd push for disc, again.

 

The entire disc technology is very mature... it's the roadie frame builders that need to learn more, how to stiffen up the frame and forks.

 

Ye I'm a MTB'er... and I've been eyeing road bikes for a while, if I do go road bike, then it will DEF be disc based.

 

The current tech on road bikes might be good enough, but you know what, it was good enough on MTB's also until it got replaced on MTB's by disc. now it's old tech, and the same thing will happen on road bikes, good enough is not a reason to stay with a older tech when there is something better.

It's not about rushing out and replacing what you have now...

 

It's what will you get if you are in the market for a new bike.

 You've made the decision, you've allocated the funds, you've gotten the pink slip from minister of finance.

you aren't allowed to ride/race in UCI-sanctioned events?

As far as I know it's just the licensed groups. If your not licensed then it doesn't matter what race it is and you can still use it.

CSA did DQ one of the VA guys at carnival city last month for riding with disk brakes.

I've had hydraulic disc brakes for a few years now. WOuld never go back to rim brakes.

 

If you are spending money on a new frame/bike go for the tech. The brakes are significantly better.

 

There have been a number of threads on this topic. As usual with some abusive posts by both sides of the coin.

 

Reality is few can argue both sides, you won't find many riders who are on discs saying they will go back to rim brakes. Other than Ventoso.

As far as I know it's just the licensed groups. If your not licensed then it doesn't matter what race it is and you can still use it.

Hence me adding the UCI decision part for those that want to partake in the vets groups as I understand it that disc brake bikes are not allowed in those groups

 

Those that want bigger tyres would need to look at gravel/cyclo framesets as the road disc frames run about 28mm tyre max, which I think is sufficient for a bike that is spending all its time on tarred roads

That is one of the reasons I am thinking of getting a road frame with disc brakes having experienced discs on my gravel bike, even with cable disc brakes.....

 

At this time I am looking at cable disc brakes as I am going to build with Campagnolo
