Is it worth it or possible to fix a crack on my aluminum frame?

The crack is around the base of the seat tube, just above the BB and crank. The crack runs almost entirely around the tube just above and through the welding.

The frame is a Schwinn Fastback from 2000

What frame is it. Ally tempers when welded so you need a really good welder. I helped a friend on a Gary Fisher and it cracked next to the weld which is not uncommon with Ally.

It's an aluminum Schwinn Fastback frame with carbon forks

I had a De Rosa Merak alloy frame that cracked around the BB. Had it welded at Weidemans in Bloemfontein. Its still holding up, 10 years later.

I had a frame welded at Weidemans as well. Still going today. Felt aluminium mtb frame.

I have had success welding aluminium frames. (Well not ME...) If you find someone that knows what they are doing, it can work. Don't forget to factor in the cost of paint after you get it welded.

Might be worth while browsing the classifieds or your LBS for a second hand frame.

A crack in an area like that should be find to weld up.

Its when the frame snaps in the middle of a post that you should be concerned about.

I had a road bike frame that snapped on the downtube but near the headtube many many years ago from pulling wheelies ala sagan style. Had it rewelded and it was held up for years after.

I agree that it may be repairable. It looks as if the weld failed - if properly cleaned and re-welded, it could last well. Unfortunate that the cracks propagated through some unwelded parts of the tube as well. It is worth a try imo,
