saddle bags are for mud bunnys on mtb's ... :whistling:

on the road you use this :

ballistic nylon pouch which fits perfectly in middle jersey pocket (and its areo)

contains:

2 bombs

spare tube

combo multitool and inflator

2 tyre levers

couple of q links

cable ties

patches

money

EMC card

and a number 2 bandage (for that bad day )

and its all padded so nothing prods you

Just dont forget your suspenders to keep your jersey from dragging on the rear wheel, especially after adding a cellphone, 2 energy bars and a pepper spray into the other pockets...

A man gets hungry when you run out at 5am for a 5hr ride :-)

A woman too.. anything over 2hrs and I take some snacks[emoji4]

It also helps with the boredom of spinning along mind numbingly on a road bike, with some rider input needed about every 10minutes

that's when you stop and pose in your uber cool outfit beside your beautiful clean bike at a trendy café on the side of the road and nibble on frappe

Uber cool outfit and beautiful clean bike I dont fit into those descriptions. More like dirt bag. Fast dirt bag.

On a mountain bike....I see no problem whatsoever... And actually I don't really care if it's cool or not... It's saved mine and fellow riders bacon a number of times

If roadbiking makes your mind numb you doing it wrong.  Its your legs and backside that should be numb. You need to go faster  :P

I feel the complete opposite .. My MTB's are clear of all clutter , no saddle bags , bottle cages or anything else .. Saddle bags on an mtb are just impractical as they fall off and rattle etc.. (not to mention look terrible   )  everything lives in the camel back..

Road bike how ever has 2 cages, battery pack for front light (in winter)  and saddle bag ( I've tried putting spares in my pockets , was so uncomfortable I didn't even leave the house - straight back to the saddle bag)..

I guess my priorities fall with MTB , couldn't care less about how I look on the road.. plus ill take comfort over looks

See now I would rather take the weight off my body and or it on my bike.. I reckon You will also climb much easier if the weight is on your bike as opposed to your body.. On my body I have a gu and an Apple and/or some nuts or biltong if it is a longer ride

I have always worried about the concept of storing hard items in the pocket that sits on your spine. Landing on your back in an accident or a slip is a reasonable risk and putting something hard and small on your spine is not a great idea. Back in the day we used to teach that you should not use a small of back holster for a handgun for the same reason.
