Cheapest Carbon Road Bike

So I have been having a look see at the pricing of various road bikes. (in the market for a new one) I have basically come to the conclusion that entry level carbon has gone up in price by roughly R6k on the 2017 models from the 2016 models. 2016 it was possible to pick something decent up for around the R24k mark. The 2017 ones seem to start from R30k.

This wouldn't normally be an issue until you see that you can buy retail a carbon road bike with 105 components from 995 pounds in the uk. that translates into R16 782.15 as at the time of this post. 17k is a long way off 30k so it seems that we are getting ripped yet again.

My question is this. What is the cheapest decent brand road bike out there in SA? Not talking about no name brands made in some dodgy factory run by oom Frikkie here.

If you want a decent bike at a good price, you should consider second hand. I have picked up some sweet deals on previously loved bikes. Slap on a new crankset (where needed) and you are usually good to go.

Schwinn seems to be back in the road market. Bike Addict is advertising a carbon version with 105 for under R20k

Merida and Scott would be good options imo.

Possibly also the only brand's who's prices didn't skyrocket once on the world tour scene.

Remember to add 15% duty and 15.4% vat & handling. Then there is credit car charges about 2-4% for online transaction.

Also whatever it costs to ship it over - so on above figures maybe R26-28k should be entry level?

Both valid points, but I think you are missing what the OP is getting at.  I don't think he is trying to say it is cheaper to import, what he is getting at is that our UK cycling brothers can pick up an entry level Carbon bike for under R20k - whereas on this side of the ocean we are paying over R30k.  (Whether he is comparing like for like is another separate point).

So either the UK have great specials or we are getting shafted somewhere.

Two points to bear in mind:  the big bike brands normally have a fixed or pegged exchange rate foe each financial year i.e at some point in the year they look at the exchange rate and take an average and use that figure for the next financial year.  I suspect, given last years exchange rate, the pound has probably been pegged at around 20 to 1 for 2017.  So despite the rand strengthening, I doubt it will have any positive impact.  (Guys in the bike business are welcome to correct me if their international suppliers don't work like this).

Point 2:  I built up a full carbon road bike with full SRAM red groupset for under R20k.  Yes, it is a no name carbon frame (not by Oom Frikkie but by uncle Yung Sing).  And yes, I had to sift around the classifieds  for a few months - but the items are there if you have patience.  (All components were second hand new or of a new bike).  Buy what you are comfortable with, but don't discount something without giving it a chance.

entry level carbon isn't always a great idea. high end alloy would be a better idea. Think CAAD10 etc.

Look for a used Cannondale CAAD10.

Lapierre Sensium 300.. Full Carbon with Tiagra 2x10spd. Shimano R500 wheels R27995.

Seems a bit pricey for Tiagra specced.
