Riding with your kid on the N7 on a windy day

Hopefully someone here will know this person and could try and talk some sense into him

Yesterday, as we turned onto the N7 from Vissershok road, there was this guy riding with his kid.

The wind was strong, and that makes this very dangerous in my mind.

I slowed down next to him told him that he is riding on a illegal stretch and that it is very dangerous for him and his kid.

His response was to shrug his shoulders.

I don’t know what the legal (insurance/medical insurance) implications will be something had to happen while you are riding on a Freeway where you are not allowed to cycle.

BUT more important, I go cold thinking what could happen if for example a truck had to come past doing 120km(speed limit there) and it is windy already, to the balance if the kid.

Or am I just overly concerned?

coenie, any reason you did not stop on the side of the road and have a chat ?

maybe offer a lift till the blue signs were no longer valid ?

EDIT: see you tried to chat to him through the window - but did you stop ?

I don't see a big problem riding on a freeway if there's adequate shoulder.

I know the okes are out training, but if there's zero alternatives what do you do?

This is the same as the cycling without helmets thread, cycling without number boards at bikeparks thread(s) and what ever other topic you can think of that will divide hubland.

obviously this oke is being a knob, you did your bit by speaking to him, if he wants to be a twit and risk his and his laaitie's life then thats on him.

Are there no other non-freeway roads he could have used?

No did not stop, to be honest when I asked him if he knew it is illegal and a very dangerous stretch of road and his response was "So what" with a dismissive hand gesture I shook my head went of thinking I should mind my own business. Then tell friends later that day, they encouraged me to post it here.

Remove all warning stickers from everything and let nature take its course and refine the gene pool a bit further.

The law is there to keep you safe but if you gonna be dumb you got to be tough.

Just sad the youngster is not being taught the right things...

He is clearly an irresponsible parent....... That kids setup is way out, and is going to lead to injury.

I'm surprised that he didn't vloek you, people tend to get very defensive when you imply that they are putting their kids lives at risk. Ever try tell a parent that the coke their kid is drinking contains 24 grams of sugar?JEEEEEZZZZ

Anyway, back on topic.

His behaviour is not on, good on you for having a polite chat. Thats all that you could do.

He is also teaching his kid that its ok to break the law.

People are going to call you out for "interfering" and tell you "leave them be", "each to their own". But let it be water off a ducks back. Doing and saying the right thing is not alway easy.

Not wanting to start a fight, but does this then mean that if you see a a dangerous act being committed that we should just leave it and move on? Think drunk driving, murder , breaking in etc?

Or should we have a list of things were we do get involved and a list we leave out? Cyclist skips red light, we say nothing....but we call the police when we a dude jump over the neighbours fence with a big knife?

Just asking?
