I had a chat with another LBS owner from the area, and he told me that a few years back there were some large scale thefts of high end bikes which were later found in a container in Durban destined for Germany.

So North of the border can be WAY North as well.

ive said many times before, my money is Europe, (much bigger market)

simply from what I have heard from local transporters running up to africa

I would stress test and poly the staff, its like a roadblock if you havent been drinking no need to fear or take offence

I hope they find where they end up it will put a whole other angle on fighting the bike theft

That points to a very well organized syndicate on both sides to cross international borders

Currently, they are not suspicious of the staff, and have asked that we don't speculate on this.

That is one heck of a list. Probably planned months in advance.

Good luck in finding the bastards James!

Were the stock insured at least?

I seem to support the idea that it could be going to Europe or up to the East or West coast of Africa. Just to much merchandise to safely get rid of in SA and don't think there is a market for that quantity in Moz. Botswana is one of the least corrupted countries in Africa and don't take crap from criminals so don't see it ending up there.

And probably had buyers lined up already

SADLY it is fact normally the husband is first suspect in a spouse killing, these types of crimes same applies, fantastic that they are confident in their staff I have hit many poly and stress tests at my business, trust me I didnt like or expect the results i got

Will be very interesting to find out how, who and where this got planned, where it's being stashed and how and where they are transporting it to and who the buyers are. Also think Europe. Hope they get hold of a good investigator as I would not rely on the powlice...

Even if it's insured it will probably only be insured for replacement cost. Problem is those models that were stolen are all the models that they would have sold over the year to make their profit. Not sure if you've ever inquired about buying Spez but I get the impression the bike shop puts in orders once for the year with the distributor. There's seldom a "mid year replenishment of stock". So if the retail on the stock was R3.2M, they'll probably only see about R2.5M of that. the other 700k is lost completely. And that 700k is what was needed to run the bike shop for the year.

(I don't know the details of the insurance, nor the markups for the LBS. I'm just making the point that "because it's insured" doesn't mean life is any easier for the guys)
