Cyclist down

We should also get their permission to start a ghost bike for Andrew.

We should really start putting them up for as many fallen cyclists as possible.

This will have a visual impact on motorists, as well as being a memorial for the rider.

Again - I am happy to contribute the painting of the bike - maybe the damaged bike could be used to highlight what happens.

I am all for this.

Please allow the family their space and time to do their thing, I am sure they are overwhelmed right now, and it still feels unreal.

We all feel their pain and I am sure they know the cycling community mourns with them.

Okay so guys pending the family's blessing the plan would be to set up a fund (managed by an attorney) to hire a private investigator to track down those responsible (others have already voiced a willingness to contribute).

After this all information would be passed on to the police, if they fail to prosecute on the matter (which I am almost sure they will) the attorney would start a process (pro bono/ free of charge) called private prosecution.

Private prosecution is a process in which a private individual uses the courts and criminal justice system to drive a criminal hearing if the state fails to.

Would someone that has contact with the family please be in touch regarding this as I feel it would be a violation of their rights to simply barge ahead with something like this.

count me in for a contribution , if each hubber contributed even R100 we could raise a sizeable amount

How about making the ghost bike out of the bike he was riding that morning, as V12 mentioned. Could have a bigger impact

It would, but the family would need to be 100% ok with that, as it could be extra painful for them too see the exact bike on regular basis.

We must just keep them in mind the whole time.

The ghost bike is a symbol of a greater cause which is cycling safety

A powerful icon of sorts

A remembrance too

His personal bike is not fitting

I have asked a close friend of his to ask the family - this will happen in a while at a more appropriate time for the family.

Edit - and it's their call entirely - both on yes/no to the ghost bike and what turns into it if it happens - I am sure we as a community will find something appropriate - and in accordance with his families wishes.

RIP Andrew

Senseless killing of an innocent person, just following his passion.

It makes me feel so angry, sad and disempowered. And scared.

Condolences to the family at this horrendous time.

May the killer be found, brought to justice, never sleep again. What piece of shark **** does this?

My thoughts are with Andrew's family & friends.

And guys, sorry but slight hijack. Cyclists taken out on bottelary road this morning. Across from devonvalley golf & wine estate. Arrived 5 minutes after, but for now won't speculate. Point being that people have offered help in this thread. Can't we set up something among hubbers & friends to try and help. Something formal. E.g. trying to pressure local authorities to change bylaws for harsher punishment? Organising a charity for donations to fallen comrades to help with money for investogators and family if needed? More awareness? Etc. I can try to help in any way possible.

I think that the only chance for change is through organisations that have some cash and clout (PPA, clubs, CSA (Yeah right  )). They should actively pursue and publicise the prosecution of offending drivers and then lobby all political parties without any pre-conceived ideas (I understand even Malema was on a bicycle recently).
