How to stop the Cycling Carnage on SA's roads?

Carbon - I don't know you but my sense is that you would become a revenant and wreak your wrath on the criminal whose negligence took you out.

If I am ever the victim of a motorist crashing into me please make sure someone is tasked with recovering the video from my bike, front and back, so it is easy to see exactly what happened and how the motorist took me out.

My contribution to removing one inconsiderate driver from the roads.

Good.

I've saved the article so that I can "Copy & Paste" paragraphs from it into online arguments with know-it-all car driving assholes when necessary.

Maybe I live in my own little dream world but this is where I would expect, CSA, PPA, Arive Alive, Dept of Transport to actually publish similar articles on their websites, in news papers, etc.  It would not cost them much if anything but get the public debate and awarness going.

"9. That cyclist who annoyed you? We're not them

Some road users are idiots. Some of those idiots drive cars, some of them ride bikes. It probably was annoying when you saw that cyclist jumping a red light. It's equally annoying, with more serious potential consequences for others, when drivers exceed the speed limit. But all cyclists don't jump red lights and all drivers don't speed. Extrapolating from one bad apple creates an antagonistic us-and-them attitude that helps no one. Let us agree that bad road users are bad road users and do our best not to be one."

No matter how hard I try and explain this to some people it still doesn't get through... that one cyclist = all cyclists

Because for such a discussion you need intellect and willingness for a logical discussion.  We normally end up having these type of debates with people who have neither, making everything useless from the start.

Please explain how the bike rider was wrong?

I would LOVE to know how you as a guy on a cycling forum can victim blame.

Take a deep breath.

He was trying to annoy the driver. So he was guilty of being a dwis, but not much else.

Here's an Urban dictionary definition of a troll, with some words replaced to relate to this situation:

“Being a prick on the internet his bike because you his can. Typically unleashing one or more cynical or sarcastic remarks annoying behaviour on an innocent by-stander a motorist, because it's the internet open (country) road and, hey, you he can.”

Default state on a bike is normally taking deep breaths. I just don't seem to get fitter.

Unfortunately we don't see the video of what preceded this but I would speculate that this was the result of some aggressive driving and hooting intimidating the rider.

However, it was a left hand bend with a solid double. There was no way the van could pass safely even if the rider was in the gutter. So he moved into the centre to make his presence a real factor for the motorists behind him.

I do exactly the same thing in left hand bends as motorists are inclined to cut corners and that is exactly where I would be. As do a lot of people who ride in traffic regularly.  I'm also inclined to overstate my rights as a rider when a motorist buzzes me.

Put yourself where it is safest for you as a bike rider? As is your right on a public road?

See my reply to Patch above.

In my opinion NOTHING justifies a motorist doing what he did to another road user. We may as well give up riding if what this driver did is justified. In any society where anarchy is not in control.

Been a nice day out on the bike, with a 200+km car trip .... saw MANY bikes out on the roads.

Also two cyclists going up Sir Lowry's pass .... next to each other ... on in the yellow lane, one ON the yellow lane.

There simply is no way for cars to use both lanes and pass this "person" safely ..... now before getting all rightous .... there are many blind corners along this road !!  Coming around a corner, next to another car there may not be time and space to avoid this person.

This was ONE out of hundreds of cyclists out on the roads today.  This ONE living on the edge and may well pay the ultimate price .. and I pity the car driver coming around a blind corner and not being able to miss this "Darwin candidate" .....

LOTS that car drivers can do to improve cyclists safety .... but also a bit of common-sense required from this type of cyclist .....
