How to stop the Cycling Carnage on SA's roads?

With so many people texting and driving these days the death toll WILL increase,

I still maintain, Face the oncoming danger , Face the traffic well within the yellow line.

Interesting line of thought .... and some very interesting feedback as well.

At first glance - wrong to ride on the wrong side of the road.

second thought - massive inconvenience for the cyclists on the right side of the road.

But as Patchelisious has said - sometimes we do break the law to improve our own safety (sorry, changing his words slightly).  So with that in mind - improving our safety ....

- I regularly do 500m of my commute on the pavement, sometimes at less than walking pace, to not touch a pedestrian.  This is still safer than that section of road.

- I watch the robots, when the other side turns orange I check for oncoming cars and if safe I pull away a moment before the light turns green.  Firstly it gets me out the way of the guy turning left without an indicator, secondly I get away and going steadily before the traffic passes me.

- wrong side of the road .... uhm ja well .... did that on my previous route, going over the N1 on Old Oak I would be on the pavement (hardly any pedestrians here), this way I am completely out of all the slip ways and multiple lanes ....  After the road works I may well do this again.  But to be clear - this does not impact on the cars, other cyclists and when I do encounter a pedestrian I slow down completely.  So SAFETY FIRST.  Would I ride on the wrong side of the road, into oncoming cyclists etc - NO, I dont think this is safe nor fair to the other cyclists.

Thus I do believe there is a time and place for everything - as long as mutual respect and safety for all is the main deciders.

Did they stay taking up the whole lane, or just at the intersection?

there is no shoulder on that road, its gravel and street vendors.

Its a bit doff though to ride 2 abreast there though.

He said they took up the whole lane until he turned off left for Fish hoek and they went straight up black hill

Did he say which club it was?

We have a duty to tell them that we don't approve.

Legally Speaking: Brought to justice

“How about I get out and f—k you up in front of your kid?”

The road-raging driver had just endangered the life of the cyclist and his toddler, and now he was spoiling for a fight. It began on a calm Sunday morning in New Orleans. Charlie Thomas had gone for a ride with his young daughter Colette, towing her in a Burley trailer, enjoying the ride and time together. But on the edge of the iconic French Quarter, their peaceful Sunday morning was violently interrupted when a speeding car buzzed them, passing within a foot of Charlie and Colette.

Did they have really awesome kit and look like they were hiding baby cows on their legs?

Joking, could never have been Savage, there is a Strava segment there, team would have been in an single file echelon for sure.

Interesting case, as well as the Thomson case too.

I suppose the easy response is "that would never work here in SA", but if we always take that view, we'll just stay in the cooking-pot, along with the frogs.....

Crowd fund a case where there is clear video evidence of the offence?

Douches

There's a "team" of mamils that I often see riding like dicks between Camps & Simonstown. Their peleton features an inordinate amount of Dogmas and their kit looks like a nod to the team Sky kit......

I think you will know who I am talking about.

Saw a guy today riding up Suikerbossie from Hout Bay at 6:51, still dark here in paradise.

Not a single light on his bike. Not front. Not back. Not even 1.

And another guy with a nice bright look at me flashing 2,000 lumen front light. No rear light.

Not clever. IMHO.
