What is the PPA doing?

I also think that Owen and Andrew let us down a bit by not pushing it.

Owen was very quick to share my tweets about "What is the PPA doing" but then doesn't ask, when he had the chance.

When did OH share your tweets? Assuming before the show was recorded (Monday afternoon, but sometimes on a Tuesday).

Has the PPA recommended road safety product Flip Flag been discussed as yet?

(Name correct? I'm on brain fumes - time for lunch)

Like, yeah, I really want to reinforce the fact that guys who ride bikes are complete eccentric nerds.

I just want to be a normal road user who rides on the road, safely, without attracting attention but being given space to safely go about my trip. Just like most motorists want to do. By law I already HAVE to wear a helmet, NOT listen to in ear entertainment, HAVE front and rear lights, HAVE reflectors in my wheels and HAVE to ride single file. I don't want to add to that burden while motorists try run me over by having a flag that sticks out a metre from my side.

Do you know about the origins of this idea or was it after you checked out?

This is just not cricket - you guys fighting about the PPA without me! ;)

(I've been riding my bike rather often lately, so I'm in no mood for fighting. My prescription for sorting out any pent up hate, anger, frustration, even disappointment, is to ride your bike to work and back every day, and then to train some in between. Soon enough you'll have nothing but love, peace and a permanent smile.) :)

He brings up:

Look after our own behavior, both motorists and cyclists, change starts at home type of thing

We must wear our helmets as its the law

If you buy an employee a bike, buy them a helmet too

Safety tips by Vogel:

1: Wear bright clothing, reflective strips, wear your helmet, stay left.

2: Motorist must be aware of us cyclist and the possibility that we swerve for things like glass and wind etc. Make space for us.

3: Obey the basic traffic rules.

When asked about riding 2 abreast, apparently being the biggest complaint.

Vogel: Single file is the rule of the road! However, when motorist approach groups of cyclists, treat them like a car, only pass them when safe to do so. Motorists, if you have the opportunity, roll down your window and remind them that they must ride single file. Cyclists are human beings.

SMS question about tax rebates for employers who buy bicycles: SARS rebates for employers who buy employees needs to be looked at. (ps: Buy our PPA bikes....)

As a cycling community, we must develop safety tips for motorists (i.e don't F%#$ text while driving, keep your eyes on the road, observe the 1m rule, overtake the cyclist safely, etc),  send a list of these tips to PPA, ask them to print it and hand out to motorists during their campaigns on Chappies etc.

I also see a note somewhere that PPA is monitoring two court cases (one of Dr Louw) and another lady. The Louw case is apparently in court early March. I seem to recall that PPA briefed a junior counsel in that matter - speak under correction.

Almost drove me off the road this afternoon. So engrossed in her book, she did not even see me trying to get her attention.

I came across one that was driving in Newlands with a bowl of oats in her lap, combining breakfast and commuting. She was terrible at multi-tasking.

Scary. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Hi again all :)

While we are trading close call stories.

Cycling home, on the cycle lane. Approach and wait at the most dangerous section for us. The Dolphin beach traffic lights. wait for cars to stop coming from beach side. Lights turn orange for them, the cars are faaarrr away. I start moving across the pedestrian crossing. A roadie (Black pants / white top) suddenly comes within millimeters of taking out my front wheel. Guy was traveling on the West Coast road, parallel to the cycle lane, jumped the red light at speed and nearly had a nasty crash. Those behind me said he also swerved out to miss me and it was close. Roadie just kept on riding, did not even say sorry.

Earlier in town, crossing a pedestrian crossing on a green man. Car comes blazing through between the person/pedestrian in front of me...so frighteningly close to the person! All the cars were slowing down, and this car just floored it instead.

At Steven Johnson Cars intersection. Light turns red for cars from city side, we counted 5 cars blazing through the red light, the last car came through so long after the light changed that she nearly collided with the cars from from P-Island side.

Stay awake out there, and expect cars to not see you and try and be one step ahead.
