What is the PPA doing?

Hats off to the commuters and be safe out there.  My 5c stays with making an example of drivers who hit cyclists, where the driver is at fault. It seems to me a lot of these offending drivers would not be the types who pay any attention to signs or road markings about cyclists.  Maybe put signs up in the casinos, pubs and shebeens and alert owners and barmen.

But all strength to PPA.

Early morning gym session yesterday I see two cyclists in the semi dark at 05h00. One "poor" commuter, dark clothing, no lights Eish. The other a roadie, mostly dark clothes, no lights. Scary

Seems like they have channeled vast funds, had a few meetings, brainstorming sessions and after much effort, managed to get a tweet out!!

More than one tweet, they filling up my time line with those things.

Will report back if I ever see one of those up.

PPA should be targeting the licensing centres by issuing free parking discs and stickers with the 'Stay wider of rider' logo. I am sure that most driver's are not aware of the rule. The licensing clerk can hand them out as they do with other advertising discs. Whats the point of only handing these out at bike shops. We as cyclists are aware of it already. There is enough of us on bikes, the challenge now is to keep us safe on our bikes.

They do. On and off.

The stickers for licence disks and back of cars cost between R3 and R5 from memory. Money disappears pretty quickly when you realise there are about 5 million cars in SA roads.

Sponsorships are needed.

Maybe the PPA can donate a rolling chassis of one of their bikes as a ghost bike when a fellow rider gets taken, just as show of their support for the fallen and the cycling community?

There's usually enough donor bikes available within the community.

The only ghost bike donation I remember PPA being involved in was the commuter who was taken out by the Golden Arrow bus in Kalk Bay a couple of years ago. They even had a useful turnout to the unveiling of the bike and got a minister or two there for the event. I would rather they are involved in this way, as they are able to leverage their contacts better!

Sure there is, but that doesn't mean the PPA can't get behind it too. It will illustrate a position of unity with the cycling community.

Look, if its a *** idea then so be it.....

However it happens, this needs to be the net result!

Liz at PPA usually co-ordinates Ghost Bikes for slain riders. They used to be very active but I cannot comment for sure now.

We unveiled one in Camps Bay on Victoria Rd during the launch of the #staywider campaign in 2015.
