"Brand New" Items for Sale

I'm probably going to take some flak for this, and maybe it's just me, but I'm a bit puzzled by how many hubbers do not seem to know what the term "brand new" means.  It seems by the hub standards that any item that is generally less than a year old, has less than 1000km of use, and is good condition can be classified as "brand new."  By definition, brand new means completely new, or NOT used.  An item cannot be used and brand new at the same time.

I understand that an item may be barely used and in like new condition.  But then state that it is barely used and in like new condition.  That is what it is - it is not brand new. To be fair, some sellers, although by definition incorrect, do at least describe how much use their "brand new" item has.  However, others seem to think it is fine to simply declare it as brand new when it is not. If you go to your bike shop to buy brand new bibs, you expect to get bibs that have never been used.  They don't have a sign saying BRAND NEW BIBS - only been worn a handful of times, didn't sweat in them too much, no rips or tears.

It's not rocket science.  Why advertise something as brand new when it isn't?

What about a brand new wife?

Virgin territory, used, slightly used, completely moeg....

BTW I am with you on this. It gets to me as well. Almost as bad as all the "softtail bikes" that are being sold...

I love this:

"Virtually brand new, hasn't been ridden 5 times

Bought for my Mrs and then she fell pregnant.

Sitting in the garage collecting dust"

I hope she is allowed inside the house once in a while...that will learn her...

My fave is when someone lies about the year model of a bike.

Short story.

Someone posted an ad for a Giant TCR. He called it a 2017 model.

I pointed out that it is in fact a 2015. Which it is.

Someone responded to said ad asking if the bike is a 2015

Seller then responded by calling me a troll and then rattling something about the bike being imported in 2016 and the warranty being for 2017. As far as I know 2nd hand bikes don't have a warranty.

There was also a PM message where I was told I was a troll. Ad has since been removed.

Those are my favorite, especially when seller tries to justify..

Ok so confession time.

I have been guilty of incorrectly claiming a bike to be a 2014 when it was in fact a 2011. When I bought the bike I was told it was a 2014. I knew nothing about road bikes at the time and I believed the seller.

When I tried to sell it last year someone pointed out that based on the tiagra groupset being a 9 speed it was unlikely that the bike was a 2014. I checked and he was right. Ad removed immediately.

Is it not part of the benefit of bikehub, that the community keeps the community safe.  When you see something that looks suspicious you mention it, if there is an easy answer from the seller there is no problems, if not then it helps other buyers make a more informed decision.

Well said.  Not everyone on the hub is a bike expert.  If a seller is corrected and respond accordingly, that is great.  It's the ones that have an error pointed out and respond harshly and refuse to correct the error that are irritating.

Another classic one is when people assume rarity means it is valuable and ask stupid money for the item. Maybe, just maybe that 25 year old bike gatthering dust in the garage is rare because it was shite.
