Which one would you recommend?

Looking at your intended purpose for the bike, perhaps you might consider asking advice from commuters and weekend warriors rather?

I thought about that but these seem more like race bikes hence why I posted it here.

Out of those 2 I'd get a Giant SCR.

My Fiance has one. She's been to France on the bike and has done a good few 80+km rides on it. It rides better that my supposedly better Merida 903

Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant by "pros" - did you mean those who are paid to race bikes for a living, or did you mean experts on bicycle knowledge?

People with knowledge would be best

What are you preparing to pay. If it was me, I would rather shop here in the classifieds for a much better bike for the same price or a similar bike to this for a better price.

Right

Both bikes have the same components. I think both will feel the same when you ride the.

Entry level road bikes are generally better quality than entry level mountainbikes.

From the specs they are not great, but with proper maintenance either should take you far. I would ask the shop to change the compact crank (50/34) to a standard one (53/39)

Look what you can find second hand for your budget also.

When I bought my last road bike, I asked for "the cheapest bike with Shimano 105 10 spd". Reason for this was that I think for the way I ride the frames would not make such a huge difference in that level of bike, also it was the first year that 105 was available in 10 spd

That's a very long ride. How long did it take her?

Disagree strongly with this statement.

Rather stick with the compact seeing how SA is mostly hill country.

Original Poster's location is listed at New Zealand, so not sure he'd save much by shopping in SA classifieds or be too concerned about SA geography.
