I just saw this! this was a hectic crash! The question is, how do you avoid this? Situations like this usually end with a couple of shouts and plenty of of near misses but this clearly shows how dangerous it actually is when back markers are caught by faster riders.

There's a whole lot wrong with this.

1 - The rider sitting up for the line that gets ridden into, is in the middle of the road, whilst the commentator is blaring about the ladies coming in to the finish. That's just looking for trouble when a group is coming by with a massive speed difference!

2 - None of the roving marshals have come ahead of the ladies group to warn the men's stragglers that the ladies sprint is coming through. (yes, this would have to be more than 100m ahead of the group to nullify any drafting advantages.)

3 - As much as you go into a head down sprint position and it is a race, the ladies need to consider that hazards like this are potentials if the item above this is not firmly dealt with.

So sad to see top racers lose racing time from their season for avoidable situations like this!

I agree with all the points you make!!

80% of the people in that group are VC riders who started at the same time as the elite women.

Finding out where to put the elite ladies a really tough job for a race organiser. Having spoken to a few after bringing my bright ideas of the hub to them and being told most of the things that I suggested have already been tried. Starting on own, starting behind elites, with Masters, behind masters. Behind second funride bunch. etc

There is a fine mix between getting them to race their own race and not get caught up in the fun ride behind them etc.

Agreed a rolling marshal should clear the road ahead of all those that are ahead.

How hard is it to get a rolling marshal per racing category... or for heavens sake at least for the elite ladies!? Race organisers seem happy to take everyone's money for entries and then skimp on safety.

A big contributing factor in my opinion is the fact that people can buy a full license and get seeded with the elites/racing bunches.  You must have a minimum seeding before getting into the racing bunches.  The experienced racers who end up cracking and not holding to the bunch have a habit of checking over the shoulder for bunches getting in from behind.  Way to often the weekend warriors end up hogging up the road in the finishing area with racing bunches approaching.

That's horrible.

There's nothing wrong with the 'weekend warrior' dawdling in the middle of the road, it's for the organizers and marshalls to manage the situation & clear slow finishers to the sides.

Amen brother! He may have caused it but I would not say it's his fault ....

One hundred percent!!!

The answer is simple. Our pros need their own races or alternatively, do not have shorter route events on the same day or same time or same place.

Yeah, the weekend warrior could be cramping or just keen to get out of the pain

Or reflecting on his race experience

Terrible sound of carbon and human on tarmac

Our entries fund the event and pros' prize money without which races can't be put on.

For the expense of a separate timing mat and inflatable you could have a separate run-in for the pros.

Not to mention that it took 20+ minutes for an ambulance to arrive as they were all out on the course. Then 3 arrived at the same time

Oh no ????
