American Classic Freebody.

Is there anybody out there that can help me with the three black metal inserts on the AMC freebody?

Mine was lost by a "bicycle shop mechanic" who did an emergency repair / replacement of a broken spoke for me. He obviously did not know what it's function was, and never reinstalled them.

I only found out once I got home and investigated as to why there was so much play on my cassette.

Phoned them, but to this date nobody knows what happened to them, as they were not on the workshop table anymore.

Can't find them loose at any LBS, and to buy a complete freebody is too expensive. (in excess of R1000.00)

LBS is responsible so should fix the problem else replace your freebody!!

Wrong, they were not interested in helping at all, did not even offer to replace / subsidise.

I gave up on pursuing this matter, gonna fix it myself.

Have you tried the agents directly yet? Give them a call, Cape Cycle Systems, but I'm sure you knew that already... Or else, PM Enzo Grande, he might be able to help you out...

Alternatively, have you tried having them machined at an engineering workshop?

Not here to bash anybody, but my immediate cycling circle were warned against using them.

Quite a "reputable" LBS, to boot.  :whistling:

Agents can't help, gotta buy complete freebody. They do not even have any damaged freebody's we can pilfer for these parts. (or so they say)

That is my next step, if I can't come right here on da hub.....

I had exactly the same issue...Only discovered there were 2 keys  missing when I attempted to remove the cluster it had pinched itself onto the freewheel body  because of two missing keys...when exactly it had happened i was not to certain....However My LBS ...organised a new freebody from AMC."no charge"

While i waited for the new part I fabricated 2 out of some out of a striker plate (fits onto door jamb, with mortise lever lock)and they worked perfectly.)

If you don't come right you can have them if you want (2 fabricated 1 original). I'm in Tokai

I appreciate your sentiment but the service you received and the follow up thereafter is poor. I would hate for it to happen to me or anyone else so i would dearly like to avoid going there. Are you going to make use of them again?

Not if I can help it. At least not for mechanical services. Emergency equipment purchases, big maybe.

My breakdown was on a Saturday morning while were out on a training ride, they did push me in their busy workshop schedule to get me going again (not in my hometown) and I only found out the steel inserts was missing when I got home after my ride. This was after they were closed already, and I phoned on the following Monday. "Obviously the workshop bench was cleaned in the interim, and the steel inserts was lost."

Owner asked me if I was sure that the inserts were in to begin with, and I immediately knew that this was a fight I'm not going to win.

He did not offer to assist in locating new inserts after it was established that the inserts was not on their workbench anymore.

That's water under the bridge, so I'm not going to name and shame them, that's not the purpose of this thread.

Contact Naas at Evobikes.

He deals with American Classic wheels and parts and may be able to help.

Spoke to Naas, Janus and Louis, no spares or no broken freebodies at that stage. Buying a new one was the only alternative.

Those inserts should be quite easy to make with the correct thickness plate and a angle grinder.

Not that easy, I had a go at it with a file and some steel plates I had. They are quite small and very fiddly to work with. An angle grinder is definitely not the tool to use there.  :D

A Dremmel might be better suited, but I do not have one available to me.
