I've been diagnosed with reactive arthritis. I've got to take Cataflam twice a day now, down from 3 times. Without it certain joints are mostly crippled. Are there other options that work as well and aren't as dangerous?

Is that all they are treating you with?

Nothing else?

HEALTH ISSUES WE SHOULD ALL ADDRESS

· Do you ever have feelings of inadequacy?

· Have you ever suffered from shyness?

· Do you sometimes wish you were more assertive?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist about Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the safe, natural way to feel better and more

confident about yourself and your actions. It can help ease you out of your

shyness and let you tell the world that you're ready and willing to do just

about anything.

You will notice the benefits of Cabernet Sauvignon almost immediately and,

with a regimen of regular doses, you can overcome any obstacles that prevent

you from living the life you want to live.

Shyness and awkwardness will be a thing of the past and you will discover

many talents you never knew you had. Stop hiding and start living.

Cabernet Sauvignon may not be right for everyone. Women who are pregnant or

nursing should not use it. However, women who wouldn't mind nursing or

becoming pregnant are encouraged to try it.

Side effects may include:

Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, incarceration, loss of motor control, loss of

clothing, loss of money, loss of virginity, delusions of grandeur, table

dancing, headache, dehydration, dry mouth, and a desire to sing Karaoke and

play all-night rounds of Strip Poker, Truth Or Dare, and Naked Twister.

Warnings:

· The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may make you think you are

whispering when you are not.

· The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may cause you to tell your

friends over and over again that you love them.

· The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may cause you to think you

can sing.

· The consumption of Cabernet Sauvignon may create the illusion that

you are tougher, smarter and better looking than most people.

I'm also on Salazopyrin and Prednisone. Just over a month into treatment and the Salazopyrin seems to have started working.

With a small assist from the prednisone....

They will wean you off the Cataflam slowly - it's just to treat the acute symptoms initially - This is more Talus's area than mine - I will defer to him if he has anything to add.

Very interetsing topic, having spent many years involved in running in SA and the big marafun training saw so many people popping pain pills and always used to criticize this practise... then one day not so far in distant past i had some nerve pain in my one foot from running and HAD to do a 70.3... coincidently i had a check with my local Doc here and he is also a runner so i asked him if there was anything safe to take to dull the pain (yep hypocrite i know...) and he said yes Ponstan... would i like some he said. I said no i have some from my last dentist visit (implant) and would think about trying it during the event if it was ok... he said sure go ahead

So question to the Docs... Ponstan yes or No while doing endurance sports?

As for my dilemma, yes i took 2... one on the morning before the event and one 30 minutes before the run...did it help... NOT that i noticed.... at the time i thought Ponstan might just be some Swiss snake oil but then it did definitely help for my sore jaw after the dentist so it does help with pain

Thanks for your comments re Ponstan guys

Ponstan is an early 60's drug. Very good for dysmenorrhoea. Slightly better for the kidneys but more prone to liver damage. There is no silver bullet (except Tramacet maybe.....)

In medicine there is always risk vs benefit. In your case the first priority is to stabilise and suppress the the inflammation that is destroying your joints. Take all the drugs your Rhumatologist prescribe. Quinine may even be added. Endurance sport and the subsequent risk of dehydration is just not important now. Physical activity is VERY important but nothing extreme. Make sure to have your heart and heart valves checked as well. Good luck buddy. This will be a battle but it is imminently controllable and mostly curable.

I am not sure but when I was sent it every one of the side effects resonated with me so I figured out it must be true...

Thanks Talus. What would extreme physical activity be defined as? Assume meduim temp rides are ok?

VERY bad Idea. Will try to answer later.

I know a few people who take Mypaid/Myprodol before rides as a preventative for headaches. To me this is a very bad idea... what should they be doing instead? Not riding due to headaches is not an option. Water intake does not seem to effect the onset or severity of the headaches, both are women between 25 and 35 of age.

@Talus - still interested to hear your opinion.

I'm not 'that' kind of Doctor....'BUT', aren't NSAID just masking the pain? Worse than that, they're being used as a prevention, presumably ahead of time?

Wouldn't getting to root cause be better? Have the ladies in question had a basic medical? Any underlying conditions, blood pressure etc? Every ride - always a headache?  Change hydration or nutrition, or intensity/duration of ride - always a headache?

Anyway back to the true medics.......

The younger one has had various tests with a cardiologist, she was diagnosed with autonomic sensitivity - her heart rate jumps up very quickly from lying to standing. The cardiologist cited in his report that the fact that her heart rate went to 200bpm was a very bad sign and she shouldn't take her sport seriously - not helpful! Intensity does play a role. but not always. She has played around with nutrition and hydration to no effect. She doesn't wear a heart rate monitor because of what the doctor said.

The older one is happy to take the pills and hasn't had it checked out!

I worry for both of them and I'm curious.

I am interested - does she also suffer from fainting symptoms immediately after she suddenly stops fairly intense exercise? light headed, nauseous etc?

Hi All,

Dont know if its been answered in the string somewhere else but it would be interesting to get a list of what comprises an NSAID - and in generic terms not medical terms.

Disprin

Panado

etc

Myprodol ? I assume this is in a different class

are they all pill based or are their creams etc that you need to be careful of.
