STRAVA and stolen bikes

this is africa,

100% dipslick, think you got the gist of it, to answer the OP's question criminals probably don't use strava because it is far less effort to steal expensive bikes without it.

Ya I'm skeptical about this. A thief doesn't need strava to find a bicycle. You're out using your bike on public roads and at least twice on every ride (departure and arrival) you are giving away the storage location of that bike.

Exactly, its the same as the people who think that basic burglars use your Facebook "check ins" to know when you are out to rob your house.... You know what is easier, just ring the door bell if you want to see if somebody is home....

Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't after you.

Unluckily (Or luckily in this case), most of us in Gauteng don't have the privilege of riding from home!

On a more serious note, I highly doubt criminals are Strava stalking to find their victims. More likely they see you ending your ride on your fancy bike, and then target that house.

Long and the short, is there cases where Strava could have been used to target certain bikes, my view probably if you look at the number of newspaper articles about it internationally.  Is it being done in South Africa, probably not.

Strava responded by increasing their security options for users, as well as that you can automatically create a 100m or larger privacy zones to hide your home / office location.  You can use it or not, it remains each persons decision, but think the OP just wanted to find out what his options are and if he should switch off strava.
