Valley of 1000 Hills is nasty. Race starts (after 'neutral' zone) on a stiff uphill. I've never ridden on a SS so it's very difficult for me to comment. If you're out to have fun, by all means attempt on the SS, but if you're going to a PB or the like, best stick with multiple gears.

You can stay in Durban and use the bus to get to the start. There's tons of places around Durban, many guest houses in La Lucia / Umhlanga area which gives you the option to ride back after the race. it will 5-10km max.

This will be to the top of Fox Hill. Take it easy, save the legs for Inchanga, Botha's Hill and the few nasty bumps around Hillcrest. 45 cutting is nothing major for any self respecting weekend warrior, and is also over in a flash. At the top of Fox hill some nice groups of similar strength normally form up and tend to stay together for most of the way home. The wind is hardly ever a major factor.
