Trail wheel build

Good day all. I currently have alex md 21 rims with shimano fh-rm35 hubs. All is relatively entry level. Its on a sola 4. Im not planning on selling it soon since i believe it has a decent frame but i do want to upgrade some parts over time. I have a buckle in the rear hub( i opened the freehub to clean it and it has play in it)I Noticed the right hand side cone lock nut was loose upon taking the hub apart( this after lbs doing a thorough check). So now i want to start by looking at a new rear wheel. I will be using the current cassette since its only got about 1k on it. Im looking for some thing that i can mostly use on xc( races like trailseeker) but also on heavy trails with small jumps and bumpy down hill. Im looking to have one build or buy a premade one for under 2k. I used the chain reaction cycles wheel builder. Will this be a good option? Xt hub and stans crest ztr

Crests are not known for being strong rims, better off looking at the arch if you want something that can take a few hits.

+1. Stay far away from Crests unless you're a light and smooth rider or are just looking for a race day wheelset.

Arch or Flow all the way.

My 2c is buy hubs that are easily serviceable with parts availability any where..

Cheap and awesome

Novatec - Standard Bearing sizes

More expensive More awesome

Hope - standard bearing sizes available at any bearing man or the like!

The flow is wider so it will give you A slightly better tyre profile than the arch which can help comfort a bit.

Arch and flow are both excellent

Why not look at the spank 345 rims?

I had some which were stolen a couple weeks ago and just got some more to rebuild what was one of the raddest Alu trail wheelsets I have ever ridden.

I have WTB i29 Asym 650b wheels too which are also pretty cool.

There are also some Easton 27mm internal rims going cheap cheap on CRC at the moment....

Under 2K will be a bit tight.  Novatec 772 hub R1400-00, Spank Subrosa R1100, Spokes R640,

Labour R380 and then add valve and rim tape.  Cheaper hubs (usually sets) and rims are available if you shop around.

I would stay clear of cup and cone bearing hubs.

Off topic

@droo you got olive and barb(whatever) inserts for my shimano brakes, WCW waiting on stock. Might pop by a bit later

Why do you want to replace the wheel because the cones need adjusting?

The cones are right. No play but wheel still wobble. Freehub has play. U have already have to true my rear wheel due to a hit on some rocks. I have heard the stock rims aren't the greatest. Im still using it but starting to look at an upgrade.

Rapide rims are awesome. Not the lightest, but great value for money. And certainly strong enough for most riding. I have a pair with Superstar hubs which I'm going to be selling soon.

Having said that, the wheel builder is a crucial part of the mix in a custom wheel set. Had mine built by Lance at Epic Bike Shop when he was still there.

Very relevant , a good wheel builder can make A cheap wheel strong

With that A bad wheel builder can also make good wheel weak. Pay a bit more for A proper build
