The Apple Watch thread

I have noticed that when using the Strava app on the Apple Watch it does not pick up/register my heart rate data any more.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the app but it is still not recording.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Yeah, same problem.  I now use the app on the phone to record my rides.  Will try again this weekend if the weather lets up and we can go riding outside.

Thanks, have you used it to count laps in the pool?

I have used mine to count laps in the pool, got it spot on. Only downside is can't export to strava native you need a R29 app for that called swim exporter (does what it says on the tin, with no fuss or fancy gimmicks)

Anyone have any tips or tricks for protecting the screen on their Apple Watch while riding? Don't personally believe that those thin screen protectors would work well with a strong enough impact. I also see that you get clip on covers that go over the screen but struggling to find one for the series 1 watch.

What apps are you guys using to record activities for Discovery purposes? The wife needs an app on the watch that displays avg heart rate while recording an activity so that she can make sure she is hitting that 70% or 80% of max HR.

Ed, you can set the workout app to display average HR. Just use the watch app on the phone to set it up

For two years the wife has had to guess what her average HR was because it doesn't show it on the workout app. I'll be back here soon - going to try set it up.

Doesn’t show an option to select Ave HR, on two different workouts

What could I be doing wrong?

Hi Guys,

Just came across this thread for the 1st time this evening...

I’m using a Series 1, and if my memory serves me: I recall that the Workout app only displays Av HR at the end of the session, in the summary. When you end the Workout session, scroll through the feedback and you will find Av HR - that’s the only time I’ve seen it.

Hope I’m right lol...

Thanks for some useful conversation

The potential work around could be getting a HR strap linking to something like wahoo or polar or whatever app that would display avg HR on the phone

Easiest workaround is to predetermine what 70-80% means for Discovery...

220 less age multiplied by %

Age 32, per Discovery:

(220-32) x 70% = 132

Just remember the number calculated.

There is a watch strap body cover, but they are a bit pricy.

The whole screen covers and body covers look cool, but if you sweat a bit it will go sit between the protector and the unit, and trusting the quality of Apple, I will not chance it, you might discover your watch damaged by sweat.

I have checked a few rubber body screen protectors, but with our mail system you will be screwed as they will steal it at the post office

Forgive me - I have just double checked myself. I was wrong. Thought it was in there

Carry on regardless... she knows what to do by now.

So I've had the Apple watch series1 for 2 years now through Vitality rewards and due to meeting my weekly targets have paid nothing more than the sign on fee back in 2016. So I'm waiting to hear from VAR that my watch is 100% paid off before I start another contract for the Apple watch 3. Has anyone else reached their 2 year status and if so what kind of notification did you get, I'm assuming it'll come around the 10th of next month as that's when I normally get the attaboy email.

Side story: dropped the bloody thing last week and screen smashed, still works but difficult to read as well as looking fugly. WeFix are quoting R4300 to repair, same watch new at iStore is R4600! I've managed to source a new screen/oled from China for around R700 so will let you know how that goes when it arrives in around 2 months (if I'm lucky).

Update: New screen arrived form China. Battling to find anyone to replace it for me so I guess I'll have to reserve some quiet time for me and Youtube to DIY it.
