Hey fellow hubbers, I'm going to be house sitting a house in Gordon's Bay for a couple of months and was considering doing the climb up to the Steenbras view point as part of my morning ride.

How safe is it to do the ride solo early in the mornings? I'll be well lit up so I'm more concerned about skelems than traffic

It has had an incident or two over the years, but fairly safe. Tough bugger climb, but amazing views and incredibly rewarding. Scary as hell descending in a headwind.

RESPECT to anybody that can climb that hill !!!

Security - dont see this as a problem

Safety - just watch for other vehicles "wondering" the lanes as the driver is not concentrating on the road.

PLEASE dont cut the corners on the way down !! I have had a couple of near miss accidents  while driving my car up there.  And there simply is NOT space to steer wide in a car ....

The first segment to the hairpin is quite tough, but get into a rhythm and it will be over before you know it. Then after the hairpin you get some respite for about 300 meters before it starts kicking up and up. The last section past the Bluegums is a killer, and then you're there.

I have yet to make this climb in one go without taking a rest to get my heartrate to come down.

Don't do this in the afternoon on a hot day. The heat will kill you.

then you should or shouldn't try ascending that mother into a headwind.
