Medical aid

Recommended Posts

As with everything in life you get what you pay for.Yes you may save a few bob here and there but you may also be giving up something huge to make that saving.

Dealing with patients every day I can say that 99% of them DO NOT know exactly what their plan entails. They are also too lazy to find out and read all the small print.

Advice:Get a broker, give up your time and let him explain everything to you.

Just a side note if you have gone for the preferred provider or hospital plan to save money.Even if the hospital is close to you and convenient you loose the option of having the BEST person operate on you.You can't come on the hub with"I need this operation.who is the best person to do it"

I have heard people complain Discovery cost me "x-amount" per month .... but they dont even know on which plan they are, never mind the benefits or limits .....  It is the 2nd highest monthly expense for most people, yet people dont bother getting the basic facts ....

Sadly it is becoming too expensive to be on an "open" option, ie any hospital.  Fortunately we have a good hospital on our network list, and thus far all our operations were their despite our medical aid network, even before going onto the network option.  But YES, there are some network hospitals I would rather avoid ... so best do your homework !!

Medical aids are evil:

The Hippocratic Oath is an oath historically taken by physicians. It is one of the most widely known of Greek medical texts. In its original form, it requires a new physician to swear, by a number of healing gods, to uphold specific ethical standards.

The most important standard for them to uphold is to overcharge the patient so greedily that it is totally un-affordable not to belong to 1 of these stokvel schemes. These type of schemes are not sustainable and less people are therefor able to afford proper health care as time goes by.

Do you go for treatment to people that swear to healing gods? You don't need medical aid - just more Weed! When you have anything that remotely resembles talking sense please share it here.

Very difficult to argue against this... now imagine being an actuary in that field... making decisions that decide whether someone (ultimately) lives or dies... not for the faint of heart

My folks (84 and 75) are on resolution Health. They pay a small fortune for the two of them (4k+)  and my dads recent stint in the hospital they had to pay 19k of the specialist's fees. The one doctor did 3 x endoscopic procedures and only charged 20k but the medical aid only paid 8k!

I have told them to get onto a GAP cover asap. What is a good recommendation for them?

There is only one medical aid and wellness programme......and thats Discovery. You get what you pay for with a medical aid. If its cheap its rubbish.

Just my humble opinion after working in the medical aid advisory business for 17 years. There is a reason why DH is 500% bigger than any other med aid. Momentum Health is tiny in comparison.

If i compare the costs of my Virgin Active membership under Vitality to Multiply, then Discovery wins hands down -- half the price.

Depends how you use it.

My company has just started to pay for my medical cover as a benefit and has chosen Discovery so i am going from my private Momentum cover to Discovery and therefore from Multiply to Vitality.

I used the Takealot vouchers in Multiply as well as the Cyclelab vouchers quite extensively so thta was quite a great savings. I was on gold (currently Silver) so the savings on my Garmin units was quite big compared to other people list prices.....

Okay - report back time.

We primarily use Stratum. No max entry age, several options from which to choose and easy to administer.

Gimme a shout if you want me to assist...

just discovered today that I was way off...My folks pay R7600 for 2 of them!!!

stay away from resolution health - sound like a bunch of crookes. Needless to say they are switching to discovery and thanks to Myles recommendation they are getting on Stratum GAP.

The move means they will not be covered for 3 months (chronic will still be covered). Little bit nervous in case something happens with my dad...but there is not much they can do

Sorry, but you cant call them crooks just based on the premium ....  Even Discovery has two plans that costs MORE than that, ie Classic Delta Comprehensive at R 7901 and Classic Comprehensive at R 8770, for two adults.

The ACTUAL question - what do they NEED ?  What plan provides the cover they require ?

PS - I am NOT commenting on "Resolution" vs "Discovery", rather that within any given medical aid people really should do their homework to make sure they buy that which provides their needs

PPS - thanks to Myles for helping out your parents

Sure....I get you....But I bet the discovery "comprehensive" is exactly that.. It covers everything and a fair percentage above medical aid rates. The fact that their plan only covered 30% of every specialist means it's not very comprehensive.

... if only ...

"comprehensive" actually relates to the additional chronic cover.

Going from "Essential" to "Classic" buys you slightly better specialist cover.  BUT - the specialists ASKS what you plan you are on ... then charge accordingly .... So even though I am on a "Classic Comprehensive" package I still pay in extra each time I see a specialist ...  ^_^

Okay, at least they do pay more than the 30% you mention ....

ja - this is what has me dumbfounded. They have 37k in their savings...so the next fight is if they will be able to use that to pay the shortfall!
