some of you might be familiar with steel-frame aficionado Stan Engelbrecht's Tour of Ara (imho the best thing to happen to cycling, like, ever).

Stan's new baby is something less vintage, no less poetic, more accessible and hopefully something that will continue to challenge the overblown commercialisation of cycling.

check it out.

do it.

I looked at this yesterday, but (un)fortunately I am doing 2 day Berg and Bush and cannot get to Calvinia in time as it starts the next day.

From the Karoobaix website:

".. no suspension of any form is allowed."

... does that mean the new Roubaix road bike is not allowed?

This definitely cancels out all the Cannondale Slates with Lefty's.

This is for (Ka)Roubaix bikes........, but we were asking the same question on our ride this morning.

Fair question - opens/closes the door for Zertz, CG-R seat posts, Thud-busters? Cannondale Slate presumably is out too.

thanks for raising the questions guys!

i will speak to Stan and see what his take is on this.

in general, the focus of the ride is simplicity & aesthetic; dealing with the difficulty of the road is primarily on the rider - not technology. where exactly that line lies is the question.

Am waiting for the first wankitit who says "well technically suspension"......

I'm not au fait with suspension definitions. Sounds like it might be fun........

I asked Stan the question about suspension on a CX bike and unfortunately it's no Lauf, or Cannonade Slate or new Specialized Roubaix. The fork has to be rigid.

Suspension stem?

Oh how they laughed as the tide kept rising....!

I think excluding suspensions like the Lauf and The Slate cuts out a few riders who bought bikes to do events like this, this isnt a dig at the event, and I personally think its a great idea.

But.

He already has tour of ara which excludes any modern bikes and components, what makes this any different.

That being said, if I could get my A into G I would be there in a heartbeat, with my 35c, steel, SSCX rig...
