Titan Stryker Expert

Hi Guys

Im looking at getting an entry level road bike just to do the odd 94.7 and world funride champs down in CT as i mostly ride my MTB. Im not too familiar with the road specs from Shimano. CWC is selling the Titan Stryker Expert for R7850. Is it a good deal or would the cheaper Titan Stryker Sport at R6399 do the job?

Not too keen on 2nd hand as i have had a bad experience previously.

The only real difference between the two seems to be that the Sport has Shimano Claris (2x8) versus the Expert with Shimano Sora (2x9).

I don't know if the Sora works/feels significantly better than the Claris, but I'd think either would do the job just fine.

Hi Tilman,

It basically boils down to the different (cheaper) Shimano groupsets.

The rest of the components look fairly the same.

Both should do the job you require them to do.

For just under R10k you can take the "COMP" with the newly designed Tiagra groupset and Shimano 501 wheel set and Shwalbe tyres...just to throw a spanner in your works   LOL...

Maybe the best would be to go visit a Shop that have stock of these bikes and decide.

Good luck and happy shopping.

In that range there is some really great second hand hardtails. But both those bikes are great at the price point for a new bike. I say go cheaper since you'll anyway want to upgrade soon and probably keep the original bike as a commuter/backup fun ride bike.

I can't find the specs for the cluster of either...

If both offer a max 25 at the back, for example, I'd say its pointless to spend R1400 extra just for one extra cog on the Expert.

You could always go for the cheaper one now, and buy a used 105 or Ultegra groupset later here on the hub ;)

Personally, I'd choose between the Sport (Claris) and the Comp (Tiagra). Bigger jump in price, yes, but also better brakes, wheels, tyres, and 10spd drivetrain. Plus I like the colour on the Comp more...

But again, as a few have said, any of these would be good enough to ride the 94.7 or Argus. I did my first Argus on a secondhand Alpina with 6 or 7 speed shifters on the downtube, and enjoyed the ride.

It's not just the extra cog, the shift quality of Sora is so much better than Claris.

I would agree, if you can spare the extra cash, go for the Tiagra specced

version.

Ah, fair enough! I don't have experience of either (or any recent road Shimano group, tbh), so no idea how they compare in terms of that.
