Rain rain rain , even now while typing this . ALthough i ride only 25 km on week days from 3 pm it is hard to get the rides in before the  government rain starts every afternoon . Twice i had to cut my training short at about the 15 or 17.5 km mark and duck out the rain . Saturday i did my 30km around OR Tambo with Paul . This morning i did 60km off road through the fields in Benoni out to Bredel and back through Pomona . The fields were a bit wet with some challenging sections and deep water crossings ( a first for me ) . Some of the route was  completely new as portions had been rained on so heavily that we had to find other ways through to get to the next gravel road . I watched my food intake this week and after this mornings ride weighed in at 103 .8kg . Im hoping this week is not so rainy and i can put in 30km intense training  daily and hopefully 2 X 60km on the weekend .

Yeah... the rain has been messing with training a bit, but I'm not complaining - I love the rain!

Why do you weigh after training? You won't be ableto get consistent/comparable results...

Good luck with your journey...

Great to see the dedication and success stories here.

Just some advice to consider..

1.Try and work in some gym work, swimming or running.Swimming and running burns alot of calories for the time spend. As we cycle more and more our bodies become more efficient..great for getting faster but not great for weight loss...especialy those that are time constrained.

2.This is the most important one..for weight loss try and rather do 2 sessions a day..even if the second one is 30mins of core work and some pushups.

I weigh after training out of habit and the only time i have no cloths on .

I do gym work at home when i cant ride ( either time or rain ) and it realy helps with upper body strength .

Swimming is my next love in sport and i try put in a good 1000m once or twice a week ( my own pool is 12 m so its very boring )

Running , no i dont do it anymore ( only ran long distance in the Defence Force 1971 )HAHA

Going to try and do some Gym work after i have trained ( short sessions at first )

Thanks guys any advice is always welcome .

Just make sure you split the 2 sessions with a couple of hours inbetween..the benefit is you get the increase in metabolism twice a day with a longer combined"glow" period than with just 1 session

Try this with swimming for upper body workout. ( I learned this from playing underwater hockey and wanting to train my upper body).

Get yourself a good set of diving goggles and a snorkel, a pool noodle some PVC pipe and a rope. Cut a meter off from the pool noodle and push the pipe through the noodle. Feed the rope through and tie it to a chair or something.

Put on the mask and snorkel and hook your feet over the noodle. Now you swim in your small pool and work your upper body without moving a mm.

Due to an intense session of work over the last month, I have not been anywhere close to neither a gym or my bikes. I fear I may have gained a couple kilos, and still I'm unable to get out there and ride. Been watching my food and alcohol intake closely, but still....

I am presently avoiding the scale.

Had a great week training which included two 55km  training rides through the Bredel , Bapsfontein , Pamona fields . One climb is about 1.5km plus long with horrible lose rock and single track to test your skill and ability . I know im getting fitter as im only about 200m behind my mates at the top . After the climb there is wide gravel road with a good down hill which you can reach over 60kph and of coarse that one i will beat everybody HAHA . Food wise i was careful and watched myself with the snacking at nite and stuck to watermelon or oranges . The proof was Sundays weigh in at 103.6 kg , so im well on my target route except that we have Xmas dinner on the way so i know ill over indulge on the Gammon and Turkey ( meat which i have eaten  very little off lately ) . We close shop on Friday so on my time off days im going to try get in 40 to 50km a day to burn off the left over Gammon and Turkey meals .

Saturday is our Benoni BP get together ride . I managed to persuade Rick and Riaan and others to join us for a  6,30 start  ( Riaan overslept so missed out ) . The East Rand had a heavy rain storm on Friday evening but the weather prediction for today was clear . Rick joined us at the BP and we had not decided on the distance yet that normally is decided on the road  by weather , water ( mud ) # of riders and who takes the lead at the next junction to extend the the ride . The first +_ 25 km were rather wet and muddy but as we got further away from Benoni the route was dry and this is were the **** hit the fan because our leader was feeling good and took us towards the North through some uncharted territory . The way back the last 20 km was fairly flat on wide gravel road and our leader plus one other and myself treated this as a flat out race to the finish . I hung in there until the leader decided to go wait for two of the stragglers . Then only the two of us kept the pace high and headed for home , A most enjoyable ride with us all coming home covered in mud ,remnants of long grass and pieces of twigs stuck in the rear derailleur from our leaders wise chose of route ( Last time he road it , it had no cut down gum tree branches ) HAHA. . On return  i did the weigh in and had hit 102,6kg . I was very pleased with myself as i had realy looked after my food intake this week . Knowing that our Xmas eve dinner of Gammon , turkey , 4 veggies and roast potatoes with a good helping of pineapple tart ,  ice cream  bar one sauce will push me up again . I did manage to get 35 km in this morning including the murderous climb from Meadowdale to Elandsfontein . Im on leave with the book The Presidents Keeper ( when i read i dont eat ) post-111826-0-53265800-1514227122_thumb.png to read so between that and training i am going to hit my 100kg by the 31st

So FirstV8, did you make your target?

I have started training at the gym again after some time off over December. I gained around 3 kg over this time, but I am focused on putting in a big effort to drop (and keep it off) around 25kg by June. I have also decided that a gym is more than just a spinning-studio, and have begun doing circuits and weights as well...DOMS --> my new shadow!

As far as riding has been, took a couple tumbles on single track the last few rides, and now I am just taking it easy. I blame the Hoogies Skills Park for making me over-confident on trails now. I take chances where I should not, and have ended up seeing my arse once or twice because of it.

best wishes with your weight loss efforts.

Training and accidents .... I have seen this more than once

- previous employer sent people on advanced driving courses ... the accident statistics for these people shot through the roof !!!!

- many friends did the BMW off road training .... MANY of them made accidents shortly after the training ..... over confidence can be dangerous.

YES - I am FOR training !!!

But be even more careful after the training ....

Great ambition. I did that about 5 years ago, losing 22kg between 1 Jan and mid April. Only problem was that I lost so much muscle in the process, that I was suddenly weaker than I can ever remember being.

Do you know any ways to mitigate the muscle loss when losing so much weight? It would be great to aspire to do something similar

Protein intake, according to most of the current literature.

1g per lb of lean bodyweight, essentially. Muscle needs it to build, retain and so on.
