29er Mtb wheels upgrade

When I got my Pyga Stage frame I just transferred all the components from my Merida ninenty nine XT across. First component upgrade I want to do is the wheelset. I think this will make the biggest difference, as my wheels feel flippen heavy and have taken a beating in the last 2 years. DT Swiss 533D-29.

Now, what do I get??? Will ZTR-Crests be a good upgrade? Should I go carbon? I weigh about 72kg.. I don't have the cash to just buy a R10k+ wheelset, so the plan is to slowly build it up and get the rims one month, spokes the next etc..

Any advice will be much appreciated!

Rapide 29 wheelset is excellent bang for buck

Or look at ZTR ARCH/FLOW (stay away from crest) on ECC huns , speak to jason at the trailhead.

Another option is Arch on Hope think you can get it for like 8k on CWC

Also look at American classic Am/ wide lightning.

All those are under 10k , not too heavy and pretty much bomb proof if you don't ride like an ass-hole.

Personally I'd go for Arch on Rapide(Novatech) hubs.

Good luck sir

ZTR Arch have proved pretty much bulletproof for me, got a couple of buddies running Crests and they have had issues.

I'll keep my old wheels on for normal day to day training (terrain is really rocky here), the new wheels I'll use whenever I go elsewhere to do a race or trails around Howick/Karkloof. I don't do big jumps so don't need something bomb-proof. I just want a lighter but strong wheelset. Thanks for the suggestions so far

I ride AM Classic Wide Lightnings on my Pyga OneTen29 with no issues.  I weight about the same as you and no dents on the rim in a over a year of riding.

Sounds like a case for some Wide Lightning! They were on special at CWC for about R6500 or so and AC hubs are awesome so if by some bad reason you taco the rims then you've still got some sweet hubs to lace some new hoops into. :)

Depends what kind of riding you'e doing but you wouldn't go too wrong with these rims

or check out alot of their wheels on special at the moment.

Like these for sub 5K

or check the classifieds for some decent deals. :)

Will I pay extra import costs on wheels?

I just got some Spank Subrosa rims. Have not actually ridden them yet but from what I've read they seem legit. All my friends that ride on Spank hoops are raving about them.

Those subrosa's are tough as nails. I've got the Oozy Trails on one of my rides and they are great wheels as well. Have had a lot of Spank rims and will always recommend them. They aren't the lightest but they are burly, stiff, wide and I've never had an issue or needed to true them. I've no qualms smashing them down anything.

Or the Flow/Hope 4's at CWC for R6500. I don't think you could go wrong with that combo, and the price is killer. If you're a real weight watcher, you might not like them, but they don't weigh tons!

If you had to buy them overseas, the shipping is generally quite heavy on wheelsets, so the savings get eaten up quickly.

Also, if you need to change axle style going forward, it's easy and cheap on the Hope hubs too.

I got Easton arc 24 and Hope 4s from CRC built up. Tax and import work around 15% value. DHL is expensive, although SA post got it to me in 3 weeks, but not sure it was worth the years I've lost in stress over those weeks.

Looking to treat the on-one with a new wheelset.

From the reasearch I have done, seems that Rapide is the way to go. A little more than I am wanting to pay, but the added benefit of being able to choose QR for my beloved steel frame, and reliable fox front shock.

Will be keeping an eye on the classifieds, and of course, hoping for a Black Friday deal that will be too good to pass over.
