Trek or Specialized?

Finally, after 6 years i want to upgrade my trusty Mongoose Teocali Super

After a bit of saving i have about 20-25k and so far my decision boils down to two bikes:

Trek Fuel EX8 29er (2015)

Specialized Stumpjumper 29er (2015)

i was considering a 27.5 but i thought i might as well keep my Goose and go 29er

I mainly want to do endurance riding and really start pushing the mileage, but i also want something that charges a bit and feels playful on the down

Im struggling with the decision between these two.

I can either:

- Have a better climber, take it easy on the down (trek)

- or Push harder on the up and enjoy the more technical stuff (spez)

Any insight appreciated

If it helps the Trek is a Medium frame and the Spez is a Large and im 1.82m

Lekker

For little more than 25k you can look at new bikes like merida 96 800 on sale for around 29k (bike addict) and giant also has great deals 2016 anthem 1 650b also around 29k or more of a trail bike YT jeffsy al 29k. If possible it would really be worth your while to stretch your budget a bit. I know there's stacks of good bikes in 20-30k region second hand but just have a look at the sales of new and old stock bikes.

I was considering an anthem, was worried it's a bit too XC for me. Would there be that much more of an advantage getting a new bike?

Fwiw you are far too tall for a medium. Seriously. Spaz is a great bike.

Also - NOT the 96. It's a bloody xc race bike. If you're looking to hit techinally challenging trails AND long days in the saddle you should be looking for something in the trip bike category, like the Fuel, new Spark, Camber, Jeffsy, Stumpy, NEW anthem 27.5, Banshee Spitfire, trance and Silverback Square.

120-140mm and 65-68deg head angle.

I say this often, listen to Myles.

The Spez is the one you want, while Im not the biggest fan of the brand that is one seriously capable bike and will always put a smile on your face. Its also the better looking of the two imo.

I was really considering the Spaz but thought i should go for something a bit more geared towards XC style as my Mongoose is more of a trail bike, even though very outdated

I see you wrote "trip bikes" havent heard of these?

You mention the Fuel here, is it a different model?

Darn autocorrect.

Trail. Not trip. And they're still perfectly capable XC machines. Certainly FAR more versatile than the Teocali. Geometry and suspension platforms have come a loooooong way since those bikes were around.

Fuel = fuel EX.
