Forgot to add, the Bergamont is sold, so that one is off the list.

Print a picture of each, and paste them about 10cm apart above your computer screen. Buy the one you keep on staring at...

PS. I still think the Anthem is a better bike (prettier too).

For me the Anthem will loose that every time, but I know it's the better bike, which is why I can't take it off the list.

2hnd is the way to go but just keep 2 concepts very close to mind when checking a used bike out:

A drive train(front chain rings/chain/cassette) is a consumable, make sure the drive train is not on its last legs because a bikes drive train can be destroyed but still ride perfectly, just next time you replace the chain everything will go pear shaped.

Suspension components fork/rear shock must be maintained and in good order, same as above even if they haven't been maintained they may appear to be working fine but the next time you service them all kinds of horribly worn parts and extraordinarily expensive repairs will become apparent.

I got totally burnt by those 2 things on a 2hnd bike purchase, before I wised up. The bike looked and rode nicely but a few weeks down the line when I noticed some niggles the truth came out, pretty much had to write the bike off, wasn't economical to replace everything and that would be even more so if you can't diy and have to take the bike to the lbs and pay their rather insane labour and parts costs.

You said you were 186 or so? You're a large or extra large unless you've got some very weird proportions you're not telling us about...

Yeah got excited to see an add that is close to me!

I'm 176cm and have a 2012 M 17" Merida big nine 29er hard tail. Had a 2015 L 19" Merida ninety nine 600 full suspension (which I had to sell, circumstances) and I was 100% comfy on them both. Same make, different models and sizes. I would suggest that you have to actually go see and ride a bike before you decide by looks, makes, full suspension or hardtail but I would say that you will definitely not be on a M. I've googled the different bikes when I decided to buy and on many websites one can see what size according to your height would be recommended. I've heard that leg (inseam) and or arm length can also have a factor on size.

Hou die rubber op die grond!

Good fork and 29er - I would have that as a minimum at your budget.

Fox32 or TK32 air or similar air fork with adjustable rebound (have seen some that don't have this)

I think you need to be a little patient and see what comes around.

You have another problem where there is not a lot of bikes close by so you may have to expand your search area.

My bossman has this Merida Matts Lite 3000-D (2011) for sale, should come in lekker under-budget and seems like a solid spec, and hasn't been used much, been standing in his lounge unused the last 2-3 years.

Any idea of what a fair offer would be for a bike in good condition? He is going to bring it to me tomorrow so that I can take it for a spin and decide if I would like to buy it. I will give it a wash and properly inspect it once I have it with me..

If it fits buy it. Just be aware that bikes have got longer since 2011 i.e an XL size then is now an L depending on the brand. It seems to have a solid spec and I'd say anything under R5k would be good. You'd probably want to change those tyres though or at least the front one for something with a bit of tread and side knobs so factor that sort of thing in...

Also shopping around, seems the bike shops are doing pretty well as not too many bother coming back to me with a budget of R7-8K....

Best deal I have found so far is a Momsen 2018 AL129, airfork, 9 speed, tubeless ready tyres and shimano brakes....R7600

Just not sold on the colour but anyway....! Beggars can't be choosers!

I know 9 speeds are not 'in' but I have just replaced most of the drivetrain on my old 26in bike, and as this is a 9 speed so I might as well factor in using those parts...never actually had any issues with 9 speeds either...

When you live far from town going second hand isn't really an option as you can end up traveling around for nothing and just wasting time and petrol.

Had one moron waste almost of month of my time promising to get back to me on his Merida Big 7...so if you see that add on Gumtree...don't bother, he always has an excuse!
