The perfect commuter

Howsit guys, so as of October I will be living in centurion 6km away from work.

I want to start commuting once I live there and have 2 options.

Option 1 fixie.

Ideally this would be something with training wheels so I can race on the track as well.

The only issue with a track bike is brakes as there is no brake mount on the front.

Option 2 CX bike

I don't ride mtb at all any more and I'm busy selling mine.

Ideally I'd like to replace it then with a CX bike such as a Spez Crux or maybe Canyon Inflite or something similar.

What do you guys think?

I like the idea of a CX, much easier to hop off the pavement/tar when your life potentially depends on it.

I personally ride a MTB when I commute, so it works fine, but a CX might bring the fun to the next level

Keep us posted on what you get in the end.

Get a CX bike, I use mine to commute to work occasionally. Can also double as a training bike, a SS can't really.

BUT you will struggle to get a Crux, they aren't being imported anymore.

The perfect commute is the bike you enjoy the most on your commute.  It would be different from one person to the next.  The CX option sounds cool to me.  My commute is normally my roadbike but then again I do not have to deal with the same traffic and road users as you do.  80% of all my rides are commutes and so would like to spend most of my commutes on my favourate bike which is my road bike.

As mentioned above you also have to look at the security for you bike at work.  If you can't take it into the office and have to leave it outside locked to a tree then a R15k+ road bike might not be the best option for commute.  Mine is locked outside with other bikes but then again we do not share the same security issues.

I think it was your instagram page I saw with the green BMC?

If it is, better than the Crux?

I saw 2 in the classifieds of which 1 is my size so with some searching I may(hopefully) find another one once the MTB is sold

Ok so have done some commutes and firmly believe you need to need to get off the road at times to stay alive , especially around centurion

So MTB or cyclecross  the only way.

I am a mtb 'r so biased so  do a hardtail, rigid fork,  fast rolling tires

Its different, the Crux can take up to 40c tyres. The BMC is a GrandFondo, more like the Spez Roubaix, runs 35c max.

Either will work well as a commuter. I tried using a MTB as some suggested, but when in traffic 700mm handle bars can be a problem.

I suggest a CX/Gravel bike that can take MTB tyres or 40c, so that you can pavement hop if need be.

I am confused, what doth a Cyclocross bike make?

Is it basically a road frame, road groupset, bigger offroad tires, no suspension?

So ... where is the confusion?  You just answered yourself.

Correct.

The frame geometries are normally different and tend to be a bit more comfy and aren't as stiff as the more racy road bikes coming out lately.

Gruppo is the same bar gear ratios. Typically with SRAM rival you'd see a 40t Chainring on the front instead of 52/36 or 50/34. Few come out with cantilever brakes most are disk now.

And then just tire clearance.
