... I'll try and get the guys involved to post directly... But stuff I could remember...

Safety officer (compulsory) - 8-10k per day

Ambulances - CSA and Sport/Rec act specify the quantity/type/vehicles/mobile clinic etc - 15k +++ per day

CSA fees - LOADS

Any structure bigger than 3x3 need eng certificate

Insurance

Toilets

I think a lot of races skip some of the requirements to save costs...

CSA loads - the organisers charge it but do they pay it over to CSA?

Yes but using distance as the measurement is nonsensical because for the most part it is only a minor driver of the cost of hosting an event (unless it is some extreme distance event). Also simply adding km's to an event doesn't simply equal better value for participants.

Absolutely agree!!!

Comparing races using cost per is is not necessarily nonsensical as long as you are comparing apples with apples eg:

- comparing a 1 stage 1 day race over 70 km on a farm with another 1 day 1 stage over 70 km on a farm should give you reasonably comparable numbers

- a town / city based race of same distance & duration can have completely different costs viz a farm race eg you can use school hall for registration opposed to hired marquee, don't need as many generators, organiser team or route official scan sleep at home and don't need S&T etc

- ditto building obstacles like water ridges, traffic bridges like for Juma 54km, vs just a flat road

- a race in the city or series event might attract more headline sponsors than a once off race somewhere in the platteland

- multi stage such as Sani2c includes a whole different level of cost structures that you won't need in a one day event - over and above the regular marquees for registration and first aid you might need food (prep and serving), fridges or reefers, accom & ablution for participants and organizers, radio towers and repeaters, Gen sets, telecoms and data, multi day event logistics

- also level of marketing and branding makes a difference comparing 1 event to another

CSA License is not a direct cost to a event owner.. its actually an income

If a CSA license is R35, R30 is paid to the Provincial Commission (who in turn should pay it over to CSA) and R5 goes to the event owner.

CSA license applicable if :

- event distance is over 15km

- the event is sanctioned

Yeah, but that adds to the riders cost and if they choose to do the event. Luckily in WP dont need to get CSA sanctioned.

But there is also a fee per rider that goes to CSA. So CSA get two sources..30 bucks from the rider (or annual fee) and 15 bucks (I think) from the event organiser

Haha! Yes sometimes I take the interwebs way too seriously

That said, fighting about the cost of events is an old established hub tradition  ^_^

dude i don't follow a single pro on FB or twitter! i don't think they have much pulling power. just look at how many followers they hav

I agree .We don,t see the pro,s or even know who is riding the event .The only time we see or hear anything is when there is a TV program .I ride some of the MTN and Nissan series events and have no clue as who is leading .The length of the row at the beer stand is more important

Not applicable to OP, but applicable to people who moan about costs of events/things in general:

People love talking about cost reduction of things. That is until their employers start looking at staff cost reductions, then the conversation quickly turns to one of value. Funny that.

Has this thread not started comparing the cost of a race entry to a new tire, or chain yet?

Thats when you know a cost of event thread has really run its course, when someone points out that for less than a Gatorskin you get to cycle the Argus!

Other CSA costs:

Pay to have event listed on calendar .

Pay dudes standing around on the day making sure the Top 3 are the Top 3.

Not sure if there is a cost to actually get event sanctioned.

Add Cleaning services for bigger events ~R15k

Timing R 10k - R250k (size depended)

Most events don't make profit without sponsorship.  And with the major decline in entries this year (30 - 50% less) event organizers are really suffering.
