How serious is this?

Just cleaned my bike and noticed that I have a crack in one of the pivot bolts.

The bike is a Scott Spark 920 2013.

Few questions:

How serious is it?

Where do I find a replacement?

What could be the cause?

Thanks!

is that bearing cocked, ie, is it sitting flush within its housing? Is the bearing the correct size? I ask because that pivot face that rests against the bearing inner race looks like it was unevenly loaded, hence the cracking.

Bearing looks flush to me and I've never touched it that it shouldn't be the right size.

Just attempted to pull the bolt but realised I have to remove the chainring as well to do so. Just tried to turn the opposite bearing with my finger, how smooth should these bearings run? If they feel slightly gritty does this mean its time for a full pivot bearing change?

When I see spark and crack in the same sentence then I immediately think of a cracked rear triangle.

That particular design loved to crack rear triangles if the pivots and bearings werent maintained regularly. If you are even slightly suspect about those bearings then replace them, its cheaper than a new rear triangle.

Thanks! Going to give my LBS a call tomorrow to arrange this.

Just pulled the bolt and tried to turn the bearing on that side with my finger, won't even spin so I think thats the culprit! Luckily it was just the bolt and not a crack in the chainstay!

Yes, they should be super smooth, no gritty bits. You could even replace it yourself.

Take the bearings to a bearing shop like bearing man to match up the bearings.

Dean: how does everything go back together again? trying to figure out what could possibly have caused that sort of cracking.

Find out how much torque is supposed to be applied to that pivot bolt, and make sure whoever re-assembles it, respects that torque value.

They definitely passed their time then, one is gritty and the other is impossible to move with a finger! Going to take the bike to my LBS tomorrow, they look after me pretty well.

Everything goes back together pretty easily. The bearing on the side of the crack won't even spin using my finger so I think that might be the cause. Going to take it to my LBS tomorrow to get a new bolt and the bearings replaced.

Torque rating on that pivot bolt is 25nm, I have a torque wrench so will run through the bike when I get it back but my LBS is pretty sharp and look after me well.
