Sorry to hear guys, it's the worst experience for sure, feeling so helpless in situations like that. May the perps suffer sudden loss of genitals in a freak accident.

There are unfortunately a few areas in and around Cape Town that I hate driving through, let alone be exposed on a bike or on foot. The N2 between Plattekloof Drive and Vissershok Road is also one of those. I cringe when I see cyclists riding there. It's just too big a risk to take. I rather gooi my bike in my car and go ride somewhere where I know I'll be safe. I don't want to have to look out or wonder if today is the day I get jacked every time I go riding.

True, especially if you've seen people living in complete safety and see their baffled faces when you fear scenarios like these. People tend to lose their minds when I mention that it's unheard of in New Zealand where my dad stays, and I get the old "Well then why don't you move there if you like it so much?!", but even as close to home as Namibia, where I often go for work, this stuff is unheard of. I walk the streets of the CBD at 03h00 in the morning with my laptop on my back with no risk of attack when I'm there. Crime really is out of control over here.

Heard that response so ofter.  Then the same people will make comment about you when you actually then just do that, move to a safer place.

With front page news, it is another hard nail into the coffin of The Argus.

Yes, argust is a long way a way. But his kind of stuff just adds to the doubt that some people may have in travelling down for a ride that may or may not go ahead, and if you enter, you will not get your money back.

It is a sad state of affairs to say "I am glad you are all ok". But it really is good news that you guys are ok and there are no stitches or more damage.

We've been avoiding Jan Smuts Drive sector between Viking Way bridge and the N2 after the guys from Crown were robbed there a few months back. Since then always go through Forest Drive in Pinelands. A bit longer, more traffic depending on time of day but all over more safer.

All the best guys and hope you recovery is quick.

Saw a group of about 8 guys coming through that road in the afternoon round 1:30PM direction Athlone riding in a bunch, not spread out as usual. Suspect that is the only way if you still need to use that route. Stick together with no stragglers. Those are the ones they target.

Hi Guys. I'm one of the unlucky ones this morning that got bike jacked on Jan Smuts drive between the N2 and Epping turnoff. We were on the way to Franschoek. 12 of us. When we saw the guys they looked as if they wanted to cross the road. A few of the guys passed and then thugs drew their knives and ran into us. They caught the tail end of the group and pushed us over, grabbed 3 of our bikes and fled towards the railway lines into Langa. 2 of us hit the ground pretty hard. we both got transported to Vincent Palloti, had xray's done and was lucky enough to be discharged after about 2 hours. It could of been so much worse if they had to try and stab us or swing that massive knife/panga at us.3 of our bikes were taken. i have attached 2 pics, waiting on the 3rd.

1st bike specs : Scott CR1 custom spray job by Bogus. black on black. Mavic R-SYS wheels. Full Ultegra 11spd gruppo. Garmin 520. Look Keo pedals. Saddle bag, black carbon water cages. old yellow type Racetec chip on front wheel. Lezyne front light holder.

2nd Bike: Focus black Rotor crankset. American Classic wheels. Sram Gruppo.

3rd Bike : Bianchi ( will post more details asap)

Please PM me your contact details as I have a cop in my club that is following up on this.

A Bianchi was spotted in Langa yesterday afternoon but he needs further details and case number before any arrests can be made.

on the stolen bikes page 17/20 bikes stolen is cape town,, I cant believe only cycling related crime is the only crime stats thats up wildly, surely It must indicate the "petty" crime in general must be on the incline in the cape, ????

For most of us that come from the surrounding areas

rondebosch/athlone/rylands/crawford etc have no real alternative but to go via pinelands if we heading to the northern suburbs.

Vangaurd drive is a no go and so is modderdam especially the piece between borchards quarry and stellenbosch arterial

You should go via Klipfontein rd > Mowbray > Forest Drive (Pinelands) > Thornton > Goodwood (Milner rd) > Parow (12th ave) > Bellville > Botelary >>
