Hi every one,

I'm looking to do my 1st mtb stage race 2018,I'm a medium rider can anyone advise wich ride to start off with as i don't want to jump into a race nd not make it past 1st day

Most of the popular stage races are doable as long as you have trained. They tend not to be technical, but don’t underestimate the training needed.

My first one was SANI2C and I loved it.

Sorry might have missed, where are you situated in the country?

Reason I ask there is a few two day races around the western cape that is meant to introduce you to the stage race scene. The one being the Houw Hoek MTB race. and think they also have a Greyton version of it

You can always try the Cradle Mountain Trophy. Takes place in april. Two days, day 1 - 78km and day 2 - 45km. Start and finish every day at the cradle of humankind. Well even if you decide to do another stage race do this one for training.

Isuzu 3 Towers in October near Nelspruit/Sabie, it allows for 3 different distances. Even if you are not a climber, the shorter  ones is very doable. The vibe is probably the best.

1)  find one or more that you can afford

2)  pick one fitting criteria point 1 that seems the most scenic / fun

3)  enter or at least try to secure an entry

4)  train as much as possible

5)  if the race scares you, train some more.  if it doesn't, train some more also

Agree with this! Great way to get into stage racing

I can highly recommend Berg&Bush. Lots of single track, but nothing too technical, awesome vibe, well organised, great food and race village.

Since it's the only one I have done I can't really compare to other races, but from a couple of buddies that have done most of the big ones (Epic, Sani, Joberg2C, Wines2Whales), they say it's one of the most fun ones, and in terms of race village right up there. I recon if it's your first stage race the fun factor should be top of the list of priorities

Perhaps this could be a bit technical as an introduction to stage racing and you need a partner. Agree with you on the vibe.

My suggestion would be Sabie Experience but depending on the format you may require a partner.

Depends what you want out of the stage race...

My first stage race was 3 towers - huge shock to the system on day 1 !

But the biggest learning curve EVER. Gained experience over the 3 days that  I'll never get riding around the local rides.

Just choose one, LEARN and enjoy!

Would live to do sani2c but don't have a partner to ride

What about that trail and trout stage ride?

Mates of mine did the Trail and Trout last year, it was there first stage race too and they thoroughly enjoyed it! From what I've heard i would recommend it to anybody!

I would recommend Berg&Bush 2 day race.

Enter, ride and see what its all about. Also more affordable than the other full stage races. The riding is also sublime.
