Hannes Botha , born 11 Oct 1978 passed away on Sept 14 .

He could fix anything and was a demon on his bike but he could not beat depression .

Hannes was still at school when he started working at Bruce Reyneke on Saturdays and school holidays . He and Peter Marais started a shop in Klerksdorp where they both raced .

Moving back to Pretoria Hannes worked for Fritz Pienaar , he started Cycletech with Marco , had his own shop at Harlequins and then moved on to Hot Spot Cycles .

He moved to Durbanville where he helped Lourens and worked at Chris Willemse Cycles .

The lure of Pretoria and an ex girlfriend took him back to Pretoria where he started Cyclerent with his close and loyal friend Izak Coetzee .

With Cyclerent doing better month after month the deep darkness and mystery of depression took him away from us .

He leaves his father ( me ) his mother in the Northern Cape , brother in Cape Town and sisters in Swakopmund and Pretoria .

We will mis him .

Handsome young man. Sincere condolences.

When mountain biking first became a thing in SA (in the late 80s), the bug bit me and a few guys at school hard. Hannes was one of those guys. He and his good friend Rudolf used to ride and explore the entire Pretoria on their bikes almost every day. So did I, but I was hesitant at first to ride with them because they were "the fast guys". Eventually though, we started riding together.

On the first ride we did, we hiked up a piece of rocky singletrack next to the Moreleta Spruit, in what I see Google Maps now calls the Moreleta Kloof Nature Area. Walking up, the trail was steep, rocky and brutal on our fully rigid bikes, with a tight switchback or two thrown in for good measure. I remember at first glance thinking "is this rideable?", but Hannes assured me that it was. We rested at the top, checked our cantilever brakes, and started bombing down. It was more drifting than bombing, actually. There was very little traction. We dispatched the switchbacks intact, almost went over the bars smashing over a drop, and then headed into the final straight stretch. At this point, I was behind Hannes. The trail went over a blind rise and then opened up into what at that point seemed to me like a 100m vertical chute which was bound to spit one out at the bottom in more than one piece. I speed-checked and braked, hard, just to maintain traction on the extremely loose rocky surface. Within a second or two, Hannes had vanished and reappeared at the exit 100m further. He hit that chute without even a single dab of his brakes, nadda. I couldn't believe my eyes. He recounted at the bottom that his record for the entire run was something like 1 minute.

This is how I remember Hannes in cycling and in life in general. No brakes, no fear, flat out.

Thanks Martin vir die boodskap en vir Pa se post. Ek onthou daai stukkie track baie goed. Dink ek besit nog eiendom daar erens...meer soos in 'n plaas as 'n plot.

Rus in vrede Mot my Boet.

Till we ride again.

Kerritz.
