Garmin LiveTracker and/or Strava Beacon (Premium membership compulsory). Not all Garmin devices are LiveTrack compatible, only the more recent ones like 520, 820, Fenix 3, Forerunner XT etc.

My wife uses find my friends with iPhone. If you know the route its handy. Only problem is when you get stuck at Bootleggers...

I am sure there is no cellphone reception at Bootleggers.  You can just as well switch your phone to flight mode to save the battery.  :whistling:

What and have her arrive at my last known location?

I don't think you're going to get away from the rider having a smartphone with them for what you want (unless you're prepared to probably part with some $$'s). I use Endomondo premium (think it costs around R350 annually) and also has free live tracking. My other half has Endomondo free version on her smartphone and can live track wherever I am on a ride/race. It's dead simple to use and isn't overly complicated with detailed ride data/segments and all that blah blah (I could care less about most of that stuff). I start the app, put my phone in a ziplock bag and into my pocket (has auto-pause, so little need to see it again until I get home and stop the app).

Hello All.

The solution lies in this product here.

At Cyclelab , the Group Leaders have one of these in their pockets, when they take the groups out.

They are constantly monitored to see where they are at all times.

Should the need arise, there is a "panic" button that can be depressed, and the control centre sees it, and they are able to send a repair vehicle , ambulance etc.

The problem with anything smartphone based is two fold.

1. You need reception.

2. you need big power batteries.

We tried most of the tracking apps on the play store, they either did not update for about 20 - 30 min at a time, or they updated well, but ate battery time.

The other thing I did not like (tin foil hat stuff), is that why would a tracking app need to access my photo's and contacts and emails etc. And they all were a bugger to try log out of and hence keep battery life sane when not riding.

fabs, is the tracker device which goes into the pocket cannot be tracked by a third party. This only happens through the cell phone app (and all its problems).

The spot 3 device is pricey and a yearly subscription pricey - and they are also not exactly accurate and perfect.

All about what compromise you are willing to make.

.. which is why I find Endomondo quite economical in terms of cost, battery power, simplicity and features. On my Samsung S5 it has enough battery life for at least 9 hours. Over the years I've tried numerous apps and for my purposes this is what I've settled on. My other half gets the free tracking (currently forever) of my event in a simplistic way, and I get some extended features for a reasonable fee. Granted, it doesn't have the instant "Help" features, but then I've set my smartphone up to do that (the latest Samsung Android OS has a feature that can send location, a sound byte and picture on 3 rapid key presses of the side button, regardless of Lock Status). I also have my ICE details on displayed on the locked screen,
