Not above the Law

Were they actively blocking the road? As in when you tried to pass, they moved out to block you? Who was hurling the abuse? The support vehicle? The cyclists?

And why the emphasis  on "LEGAL"? Do you feel someone wasn't legal on the road? Were they operating in an illegal manner?

So many vague statements.

Yes they were blocking intersections through Merrivale.

This is Illegal . You cant block a road because you have riders coming, this is illegal.

The support vehicle were hurling abuse.

Nothing Vague about it.

Pure Savage.

The back up team blocked the roads illegally to prevent motorists from driving as they had cyclists on the road. NOTE this was not a sanctioned event with road closures etc.

They then hurled verbal abuse at those drivers that tried to proceed LEGALY.

This is NOT on.

Why is it illegal for a back up vehicle? I pass cars crawling along the whole time, never seen a cop pull them over.

It may be frustrating but they probably dont like being dead. I know there are okes that do it in the south as well, they do it for safety from cars and hi jackers. Yes its a pain but its hard to argue with stats.

Well your original post was rather vague.

Although I dont see how blocking an intersection stops you passing the cyclists as per original post?

I think we have all agreed that hurling abuse is not lekker.

The hurling of abuse we have all agreed is fine, and as savage said above my mention of vague pertained to your original post, which just said the support vehicle is illegal with no clarification as to why it is. . .

I understand now that them blocking the intersections is illegal( if they did it in the manner in which traffic cops block intersections when a convoy is coming thru).

Just a quick question, what lead them to hurl abuse at you and other road users? Rational people don't abuse others for no reason?

Definitely. In Kenya I was surprised that every single car gave a short hoot when approaching cyclists as a warning, before passing them safely.

In SA people just drive over you. And as you lie bleeding on the road, you see the bikes strapped to the 4x4 as it speeds off.

I was in Kenya 4 weeks ago. At 5am in the morning (still dark), on a dual carriage high way, there were cars with NO LIGHTS driving on the RHS of the road, against on coming traffic...

I doubt they were worrying about cyclists...don't think their driving habits are really better than ours in S.A.

When it was said to them you cant block an intersection the abuse started.

F It this is not on....

Im a cyclist and it is  "People" like this that that start all the *** and friction between cyclist and drivers of cars.

If I was ticked off and I'm a cyclist imagine how other NON cyclists would feel.

Which ever "CLUB" had there ride in this area they need to sort out there attitudes.

The roadies that were cycling in KZN Merrivale area over the weekend.......

Your convoy of support vehicles is NOT above the law.

To block the road and hurl abuse at other LEGAL road users is not on.

I hope your back up vehicle suffered numerous flat tyres

Saw much the same on Saturday morning on the R45, near the Motor museum.  (outside Franschoek) ... nice twisty section of road.

A team sporting AG clothing, was cycling with a back-up vehicle sporting the AG logo.  The back-up vehicle was positioned such that it effectively blocked cars from passing.  And the cyclists were riding four abreast, well into the roadway - despite a very wide yellow lane section.

SORRY, but this sport can do without the negative centiment such behaviour stirs up .....

Most see the bigger picture, unfortunately the idiots that keep behaving like this apparently have no common sense or have massive entitlement issues.
