2x10 to 1x12 is it worth it??

My drivetrain on my trusty 2014  Spez Camber is basically done, i need new cassette, chain, front rings etc.  Hell even my derailer is due a replacement.

Ive always had 2x10 sram mixed with xt derailers front and back including xt shifters.  QUestion is this, should i replace what needs to be replaced for approx R5k or go the 1x12 route with the sram GX for approx R7k.  I ride in the Western Cape with some steep hills, lots of technical trails and a few marathan/stage races thrown in.

IS the 1x12 capable of giving me the Granny gear i love so much on my 2x10 and will it have enough gearing for the long flats/downhills we sometimes have to contend with?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Short answer - it depends on your current setup, as in what blades you have in front, and what cassette you have at the back.

Reason I say this: If you have the 28/36 and an 11-36 then yes, you can replicate it with 1x11 or 1x12, with a 36/11-46 mix (sunrace cassette)

28/36 = 0.777777 wheel rotations per crank rotation

36/46 = 0.7826  wheel rotations per crank rotation (0.6% actual difference in gear difficulty)

36/11 will remain the same at the top end as that's what you've got on both.

Any variation in the above numbers will cause a differential in either the top or the bottom, unless you get the e-13 9-46t cassette, which gives you additional bottom end and allows you to have a slightly smaller front ring at the same time.

If you look at the available ratios on both systems, the 1x12 is always going to be a compromise. Either on the granny gear or the top end. Have also looked at this and for me at least, I will be sticking with the 2x10. My legs just are not good enough for a 1x12. Maybe I am wrong, but for me it seems like the best option.

Forgot to add that out of all the 1x systems, the e-13 that Myles mentioned, does seem like the best fit. However for me I would have to add the cost of a new free hub or something like that.

I would say "yes", but first tell us what your current setup is. If you're running 39-26 with a 11-36 cassette then you will be able to replicate that just about to the number on a 1x12 using a 36T chainring.

On a 36-24 you can move to a 34T chainring and have a higher top end and the same granny.

It all depends on what you're currently running.

"Always" is not quite right. As above, tell us what you're currently running then we can have a look.

1x10 with a 11-36 at the back. Front 36/22. Had a 24 but battled. Maybe I just need to HTFU

I have recently come from XT 2x10 to GX 1x12. The biggest ball ache of 2x was dropped chains on the downshift.

My 2x had an even bigger range than what Myles mentioned above. I had 24-38 on the front with the 11-36 cassette.

Now running Eagle with a 32T chainring.

Old ratios: 3.45 - 0.67

New ratios: 3.2 - 0.64

I'm basically sacrificing 10% on either end, but it's really no big deal. I would put a 34T chainring on if I could, but only to try stay out of the small cassette cogs to reduce wear.

I assume you mean 2x10 and not 1x10.

Should you go 1x12 you can opt for a 32T chainring and have a granny that's between your current and that of the 24T you had before and still have the same top end. Slightly down, but not much.

XT 11sp upgrade for 3K with some black friday special IMO.
