Road cycling racing bunches

Hi all,

Apologies if this is a silly question or has already be answered. I did a search on here and google with out luck, so I am hoping that the knowledgeable hubbers can help out.

I have always been more triathlon focused but am looking to get into some road racing. My question is how do the bunches work?

I know you get Elites, Vets A,B,C and Open seeded A,B,C.....etc. I get in the open seeded the faster you are the earlier bunches you start in, so entering lots of race and getting a decent seeding is the goal.

What are the requirements for Vets (I am discounting Elites) and how does Vets A  differ from the seeded A group for example?

Are there any good road races coming up in Gauteng over the next 6 months that are worth entering?

Depends how old you are. VA for most races is 30-39. VB is 40-49 etc. For bigger races like 947 its 5 year gaps(30-34, 35-39 etc)

You need a domestic racing license for vets and a seeding below 16(I think??).

A few races in the new year. go to the cycle events website to see whats on.

Thanks that was exactly what I was looking for. I'm 32, so would would be VA then if I get the right seeding?

What seeding do they base it on or is there a specific cycling SA seeding? I know there is Racetec, SAS seeding, ASG has their own seeding etc. How do you get a domestic racing license?

How does the racing compare between VA and seeded A for example? is there a benefit getting into the racing bunches as opposed to the higher seeded open bunches?

For me, racing in A batch is hard, but the effort level is constant. With VA's it's basically 2+ hours of intervals.

If you struggle in open you not gonna make it in vets. I would race open, move up the seeded ladder to A, show consistent good results (top 10) then take the leap to vets.

I wonder if one can get sued for such a comment?

Probably not, because Vets riders have tested positive before, so yes, it’s been proven that some do dope.

Come okes please help the OP

Well from our perspective in Cape Town, if you wanna roll in the elites groups you need a CSA waste of money card and pay R600. Then as a weekend warrior you will just need to hang on up the climbs see blood, then try and stay with all the attacks and some weekends you finish with the bunch sometimes you dont.

We have had a lekker season in the A bunch, some strong okes, attacks, break aways, chases, a little team strategy, plenty of suffering and a lot of fun. We got lot more enjoyment from that than, finishing with the bunch, personally.

The Cat 2 and Cat 3 at this weekends league was less than 15 in total.

Next season if they change the entry fee to league we may race their again, check the vibe out.

The A bunch finish anything from 90 seconds to 5 minutes slower than the elites normally.

VA ridets attack more for longer and harder. If you can finish easyliy with the front bunch A and and some more interval training you should be able to hang with the VA's but test the water with flat courses 1st.
