A foul thing happened on the trail yesterday

With a beautiful morning of Cape weather in store I took off on my usual ride on the Tygerberg MTB trails.

While riding adjacent to Casia restaurant at Nitida, a large guinea fowl appeared from the vinyards and started chasing me..... squawking and flying feathers were the name of the game. I increased my pace becausa I didnt want the fowl to think that I was some sort of predator. However, the chaser was relentless.

After pursuing me for about 20 meters, the fowl ATTACKED me.... It launched itself onto my back and went berserk pecking and clawing at my back and shoulder. I managed to shrug it off and rode away.

Although it only released a bit of adrenaline and didn't really bother me too much, I think it may have been  spectacle though for anyone at Casia restaurant looking onto the trail. I had one cut on my shoulder for my sins and a slightly bruised ego. I suspect it was a mother fowl with recently laid eggs

I was however, a unique experience which I had not encountered in many years of riding the mtb trails and I am appreciative therefore.

Can guinea fowl have rabies?

Either that or a young chap, full of the Christmas spirits who mistook you for the chick he kissed under the mistletoe.......

I just thank god that the damn bird didn’t move a stone on the trail while chasing you!

Ha ha... yes because we DON'T! JUST DON'T!! do that.

I was also wondering about the rabies... but I feel fine.

Or revenge for stuffing and eating his cousin a few days earlier.

It’s normally the other way round with me...I seem to forever be chasing some running guinea fowl down a bit of single track at Meerendal or Majik...

But the real reason is most likely that you didn’t return his(/her?) friendly wave?! [emoji112]

top-notch experience. fleeing from a skebanga-bird. and gives you a good clue how great your fight or fright response is. would love to see some power meter data!!  :w00t:

pedantically speaking, it's unlikely to be the egg thing (brooding seasons over for now). more likely some little ones nearby. they're normally not the brightest buttons

I was dive bombed by a magpie here 3 days ago. First it hit the top of my helmet ready hard. (No, I don't mean a bird hit my helmet, I mean a magpie catapulted into my cranium.) and almost came off at 35kph. I looked up and the f*cker attacked again. 3 or 4 times. On the way back same thing. Almost hit my face with it's claws on one swerve passed my earhole.
