This is a guy I watch occasionally.

He uses ultrasound, maybe someone out there in SA that can help you. There was a guy at Stelliies University, but can't remember his name.

Otherwise, send him an email, costs you nothing and his opinion might help you decide which way to go.

I’ve got two carbon bikes. I’ve built and rebuilt them, serviced etc and I’ve never ever clamped them by the carbon frame. Ever. That’s just bad practice IMO.

I’m also no expert but that does look like external damage. A crack that develops from the material comes through the paintwork differently. More like hairline fractures.

It seems to be unanimous that it is not a defect. Something has caused the crack, which means you can claim from insurance with a clear conscience.

The only problem is telling them what caused it. Perhaps your bike shop can give a damage report along with the report from the distributors saying it's not a defect.

I wouldn't go the repair route. I'm sure you don't want to ride your brand new bike knowing it has been repaired. Besides a repair and respray will cost a lot more than insurance excess.

Unless of course, you have one of those policies that repair rather than replace.

Another good carbon manufacturing video, Allied cycles. pay attention to the weave patterns, there is definitely room for error in the placement of the sheets, ito unidirectional ply etc.

I bought a top- end bike ........ They reckon it is the 1st time something like this happened and decided it is as result of external damage such as transport/ work stand. ...............

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Punish them for using that line of bull****.....

I think it would be the first time a crack like that has appeared as a result of normal use.

If I have a problem with something and the guy in the shop tells me "it's the first time I've seen that", then it's usually just him sharing his inexperience and ignorance and trying to deflect. It's the wrong way to handle someone who comes to you for help/advice. Usually just an honest "I don't know, I'll find out". But then I guess shop jocks aren't supposed to admit that they "don't know" something.

Cracks can appear from normal use if a frame is faulty.

I thought JR was referring to the description as being  "a top-end bike"

Wow, you really seem to know a lot.

Edit: Sorry, I just got a little upset when I read your comment.

So some context: I used to be a so called "shop jock" not very long ago.

You'd be surprised just how ignorant and ARROGANT some people really are. So near the end of my time in this sad, depressing pit that is the cycling retail industry, I didn't even bother arguing with those who seemed to know everything.

I'm not implying that you are one of them, your post just triggered me. My apologies for that.
