Wheelbuild advice please!

So I want to build some wider wheels for my Jeffsy.

The stock wheelset has been faultless but I have the upgrade itch and would like to go wider.

Current build plan:

  • DT Swiss XM481 rims 525g for 29 inch
  • DT Swiss Straightpull 350 hubs, 6 bolt
  • DT Swiss Competition Straightpull spokes

The above build is a immitation of the DT XM 1501 wheelset using 350 hubs rather than 240's.

Above build with 28 spokes +- 1863 g

Above build with 32 spokes +- 1911 g

Weighing up whether to go for 28 hole or 32 hole. Current wheelset (DT Swiss M1900) is 28 spoke and is still true and stiff, quite impressed to be honest. I am leaning to 28...

Wheelset bult up will be around R7k with the current exchange rate. Am I better off getting a set of Flow's on Hope from oom Chris?

I'd recommend J bend spokes rather than straight pull.  Far easier to get spares, cheaper and less fiddly to work with.

In my opinion, straight pull spokes have zero advantage but lots of drawbacks.

Straightpull has a weight saving (hub) over J-bend and I prefer the look of them.

The Arch rims are too narrow to justify the upgrade, Flow has a weight penalty and the Flow rim is from my research inferior to the new DT XM 481 rim from a reliability perspective, as a bonus the XM 481 is 30mm internal compared to 29 for the Flow.

My mass is 85kg, so the 32 hole might be worthwile

I did consider going rims only, however the old rims will not be worth much whereas a wheelset would be sold easier. The price difference is not that much when you consider the sale of the old wheelset.

Thanks for input sofar guys

VERY impressed with mine.

3 things - one, if you're riding that Jeffsy anywhere near like it's meant to be ridden go 32H.

Second, the Flow on Hope from Oom Chris come with straight gauge spokes. Do with this info what you will.

Last - if you're going straight pull, buy some extra spokes.

(Also, brass nipples. Alu nipples are the devil's spawn.)

I have hear great things about the i35 rims. They are however too wide for my tire goals and wheeleset mass goals.

Get a set of carbon wheels from XMCarbon Speed, in whatever width and spec you need. They'll build them on whatever hubs you like and the pricing is pretty decent.

Now things are getting interesting...

@ David Marshall please elaborate on straightpull issues?

@Droo, I am aware of the cheapass spokes that CWC uses, not my preferred option. And every moegoe on the mountain has ZTR rims on Hope hubs.

I RARELY bottom my Jeffsy at the rear so I am probably not riding it as I should...

If CWC is using straight gauge spokes, stay away.

There's no issue with straight pull hubs and spokes. DT Swiss are very good hubs but with the $/Rand exchange rate they are also very expensive. You can get as good but lighter alu hubs at a better price because of the high Rand/$ exchange rate

What advice are you looking for?

What is your weight?

What are the riding conditions e.g. marathon, XC or trail?

What is your Jeffsy?
