The three races have been renamed after wines produced in the area.
The first race (26 – 28 October 2018) is the FNB Wines2Whales Chardonnay,
The second race (29 – 31 October 2018) is the FNB Wines2Whales Pinotage.
The third race (2 – 4 November 2018) is the FNB Wines2Whales Shiraz.

Prices per team range from R12 800 (no accommodation), R14 500 (standard tented accommodation) and R20 000 (luxury tented accommodation).

Sorry man, my personal opinion = i think this is immensely lame.

While i understand there is ''new'' ownership of the event, and its the 10 year Anniversary and the organisers are wanting to breath new life into the W2W....i just cannot bring myself to say ''Hey, im doing the Shiraz/Chardonnay/Pinotage this year''.

I think its cringeworthy, and the marketing department should have a proper word with themselves.

AND, looks like price for Lux accomm has increased the price considerably YOY.

Doesn't mean i wont do it.....

Pricing is getting out of hand, but I guess it's like the water crisis supply and demand,

I’m out boys and girls. I usually do 2 events a year. For R20k (6 days of riding) I can go and do this with 2 or 3 mates in June:

Good for some perspective, but to be fair R20k is the cost for a team of 2 vs a trip for 1. For most this comparison will be R7K vs R20K. Personally I also don't think R20k is good value for money for this event (as mentioned last year) but I am also not the target market at which they are aiming for with the luxury option.

Its not quite Apples for Apples. Sharing a condo with a few mates is better than tenting it, but we will have to provide our own grub, the W2W cost excludes accommodation, flights etc. for visitors from up country (add up to R4K if you are not local).

For R20K I’ll be doing at least 6 days of riding in the Alps.

I’ve done Sani, Sabie, W2W, PE->Plett, many events in Knysna, CPT, Gravel and Grape, Origin, Simonsberg Contour, the list goes on.

I’ve never been to the Alps though, so after doing W2W a multitude of times I am rather doing something else on my bucket list, and for the cost of W2W and Sani2C combined.

The equation is easy. 2 local 3 day races or this.

Well for all the talk about the new confusing names, costs, etc, sounds like all the races have nearly sold out.

Clearly it remains a race the riders value

In prior years they were sold out within hours from entries opening with long waiting lists within 24 hours. I suspect that the pricing has come close to hitting its ceiling.

Personally I do not care what names are given to an event. I am just too grateful that there are still sponsors looking to support our sport and provide me with (usually) affordable rides. I feel that nagging them about little things is a risky practice as we could annoy and lose them.
