I cycle, used to motorcycle and have always been a motorist. Having been a biker and still a cyclist informs my driving today. In other words I am aware of the vulnerability of a cyclist or biker on the roads and try at all times to drive accordingly.

Most motorists are not cyclists or bikers and therein lies the problem.

Precisely the point i was trying to make on the safety forum. Think like a cyclist. You will make different decisions about what risks you take. You aren't in a 2 ton hunk of steel with airbags, you are the squishy thing on top.

Not here mate, that was most certainly not DD's message or intention. It is completley normal to be more worried about people you know than strangers.

Very good point. I just cannot help but wonder if we as cyclists really accept how vulnerable we are. I see so many cyclists without lights and not obeying red lights or stop signs that I have to wonder if we truly accept that we are the squishy thing on top.

I am sure you are crying your heart out every day while Syria is being bombed to smithereens.

You act very differently when you put away the lycra warrior arrogance. I agree on all points. Ride single file. Stop at traffic lights and intersections, get bright lights front and back.  Assume the person hasn't seen you. Look for alternative lines - i'd rather try my luck offroad on a roadbike than hit something.  I have spent lots of time on motorbikes as well and the sixth sense started there. It's never left me. You have much higher speeds on bikes and the closing rates are much quicker if you do have an issue so you have to learn to avoid things.

The name/identity of the fallen rider wasn’t known at the time DD posted... #perspective

Yes, if someone is familiar there’s social significance

If it is someone anonymous, one can be healthily detached

Imagine feeling heightened feelings for every person in distress... I’d be a hollow shell

added that bit

Sad news indeed. Sorry to hear

I concur with the above post.

I am more aware now than I was before I started cycling as a hobby. I am muuuchh more patient, thoughtful and considerate. And that's not because I was an ass previously but because in da past I didn't know why cyclists did what they do (so my few lost couple of minutes riding behind them sometimes now feels worth my time)

Education and creating awareness is key.

Boy you are way off the mark, way. As has been pointed out already, but since you have something to say feel free to get in touch directly. Am not going to derail this thread with puerile nonsense.
