sani2c

He he Mr LongDonkey; I can advise having had the dubious honour of finishing an unchallenged stone last in sani2c one year. poor training, a bit sick and very hot weather are my excuses.

Advice; try your best to keep something in reserve (that is what I learnt for the future having blown completely and comprehensively on Day 2) and set your pace to what you think you can maintain. Each day has a little sting at the end; the haul up to the club on Day 1, from the church stop on Day 2 and now back up to the school on Day 3. When you are blown you feel every uphill millimetre. Use strong peppermint flavour bum lube as a last resort; not sure if that is classed as doping - turps worked for Tolla van der Merwe's donkeys; what can possibly go wrong..

LongDonkey - all depends on how many times you did the Spruit in your month back as well as what sort of exercise you have been doing in your 3 years off the bike.

I think it is really going to be tough so good luck .

In terms of advise, the one thing that stood out for me last year was that on both day 1 & 2 there were tough climbs after the waterpoints so don't let the legs get too cold at the stops.

Not sure the mods will appreciate all my effing and blinding that i may vent, but will make a plan. I know i will finish, just the suffer score between start and finish will be the difficult bit.

Thanks for advice Wet Ears, i will be taking climbs slow, and muscles cooling have not been a prob for me historically.

Next week this time we (adventure guys) will be dropping down into the Umko Valley

I'm scared! But excited!!!

That was the best section of trail I did in my life.    :D

Will do the S2C or J2C just to be able to do the Umko Drop again. Although the climb out the valley, beautiful as it was, was very hard work in 42deg heat.

Challenges:

Been offered a spot next week for the race,if i had another months training i would be fine. Only been cycling again for a month after a 3 yr break. Been doing the Spruit at about 16 km/h for 2 hour rides and feeling OK. Any advice from those who have done Sani2C (fit or unfit answers appreciated) on if i will pull out on day 2 as i am unfit enough. Really keen to do it but very short notice for training. 3 years ago i was fit and strong enough to probably finish comfortably in the top half of finishes of this race.

I hope your partner knows he is in for some long days! Personally I think it's going to be a very hard for you and I doubt your legs will be strong enough or fit enough for the climbs.

Figuring there will be a few walks. Time to appreciate the scenery and stuff. I am not naive enough to believe it will be simple and granny gear will be used a lot at a low pace. The partner is aware of my shortcomings, but i am confident i will survive. The beers at the beach will be worth it.

So the training weekend went well.

Reps up Delts Park hill on Friday

Took just over 2 hrs for the Trailseeker half marathon on Sat

Then the recovery 3 hr ride to the cradle, 1100 m ascent (road bike.. but still)

Crash training 101, what not to do.

My Bad. Blood still coming out my ears and bung hole.

Was too tired to think of typing on a phone during the race village relaxers.

OK, so .....

Lesson one, I am glad that muscle memory is a reality, its the only reason i finished.

Lesson 2: check your shocks are on full open for day one. Misread the damn label on the shocks and locked them out. Forgot you can stand up and pump the handlebars to see if the shocks are open or locked........

Lesson 3, listen to the commissaire when they say FILL UP AT DAY 2 WATERPOINT 1. Unless you are a pro who can do Iconic in 16 mins, you are going to be hot and sweaty out there. I took the chicken run on Hlegabafazi. Wow, they so mislabeled the ascent locations and elevations on the sticker they gave us for the top tube. Long and Gradual vs Short and Steep......? My ass. It was long and only slightly less steep. Well thats my opinion and I am sticking with it. Otherwise it was VERY nice to get to the school finish before Jolivet. I had realistic feelings i was going to the timed out along the way as average speed dropped very quickly after the Umko drop. But made it into camp comfortably in the end.

Lesson 4 : There are some cool people out there who all need a cheery hello and a "keep it up you are almost there"

Overall

Day 3 was much better and i managed to ride most of the hills.Descents were great on day 3 and i managed to catch up some time on the more nervous descenders out there. Only got caught by the first few chasing pros just before we got to the floating bridge. Its embarrassing watching them come past you at 180 kph.

If you want to have fun, you definitely need to be fit, but at least i did finish. Thankfully i was not in the bottom 10% of riders, cos some of them had seriously long hours in the saddle.

Water points all very well managed and very well stocked. The folks there were friendly and very supportive. The Pevensey WP was a humbling experience. People who are happy and then you know that you need to dial down your attitude a lot and be very thankful you have what you do.

Bucket list : tick

Would i do it again?.... We will see fitness levels over the next year and if work allows, so maybe.
