No Talk about Clint Hendricks

I think Eldron is taking unnecessary heat here.

The word hate is thrown around a bit too much - no one hates Clint.

Maybe he is not expressing himself in a very likable way.

Let's break it down:

  • Does he think the achievement was good? Yes
  • Does he think the achievement was world class? No, with reason.
  • Probability of Clint getting pulled into Team Sky: zero.
  • National Hero for a medal: For sure.

Let's relax.

While South Africa's Clint Hendricks' superb bronze medal performance at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games might have caught the TV commentary on the hop, another overlooked fact is that all three road race medallists ride for Continental teams.

That's right, winner Steele Von Hof (along with SA's Brendon Davids) is part of the Australian Bennelong SwissWellness Cycling Team p/b Cervélo outfit while Jon Mould and Clint himself ride for JLT Condor and Team BCX Cycling respectively. It might have seemed strange to some that World Tour Mitchelton-SCOTT pro's like Cameron Meyer (Australia) and Jack Bauer (NZ) were doing on domestique duty for the lesser known names like Steele and Kiwi Hayden Mccormick but that is exactly what happened. So for Clint to be in the mix right at the end of such an attritive event on diet of SA 100km racing shows his class, temperament and ability to rise to the occasion.

Congratulations Clint!

And team principals worldwide, please take note.

I still don't agree with the UCI though - given the choice between having a CWG gold medal or 5th place at PR I'd choose 5th place at PR every time!

chicken and egg

this fish and chips rider from Wales won the last one

if it was all about easy UCI points, then why didn't bling mathews rock up?

Wasn't Nolan Hofman also at the CWG?

If yes, where did he end up?

Clint also beat Dan The Man from Nam.

So yeah, WELL DONE CLINT!!!!

he ended up drinking coke on the side of the road after 60k's

It's the big social media polarization. If you ain't totally for something you're obviously completely against it!!

Social media knows no middle ground.

.

Plus I'm ok with people I dont know and will probably never meet thinking I'm a hater. I know more about the UCI points system because of this thread and for me that is a win.

Matthews (along with most of the UCI top 200) was at Amstel Gold which clears up the prestige versus points issue in my opinion.

Rowe managed to make it from PR to CWG - if CWG was of real importance in the cycling world more top flight riders would have done the same.

We're probably arguing in circles here - like Karma said I think it was a great result for Clint - not a great result in the bigger cycling picture but  a good result for Clint and Team SA.

It'll be interesting to see if the CWG bronze opens doors for Clint - that'll be a decent acid test for if the CWG has real world importance.

I don't think anyone is doubting which was the bigger race this weekend, while I totally agree with prestige - UCI points allocations is probably not the way to measure anything.

speaking of karma - sam gaze fell of the back of the sprint

interestingly, we didn't even send a road team to Glasgow, so this is a decent return.

Agreed on all points.

4 hours of racing is probably drained Gaze's XCO trained "90min" legs a little.

I was pleasantly surprised when I had a look at the UCI points list - quite a few young saffers with UCI points. The future looks pretty good for SA cycling at the moment!

Nay worries - my first comment about him being beaten by a man who was recently in a neck brace probably didn't set the correct tone

Here are the rankings for interested parties.

http://www.uci.ch/road/ranking/

SA is currently 20th (up from 22nd thanks to Clint and Daryl's recent exploits).

My newly adopted home of Denmark is 10th which amazes me given the kaaak weather, small population and the pancake flat terrain!

Edit: The UCI gave out 300 points for winning the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race! 300 gormless points - I would nay have guessed that
