just cause we live in GP doesn't mean we don't go places. The amount of times I have hit 55KPh+ on a descent in Sabie Classic or Forest 2 Falls. Pretty much happenes every time I ride a race in the lowveld. And then again with the 550% range my 2x affords me I can still climb with the best of them when the terrain calls for it.

But those events are not really mtb events are they? More like gravel bike events?

1x dominated at the Epic. Surely epic riders can't be wrong. That's the most extreme event and THE real test of equipment suitableness. Just ask Chris

that 1 x 12 may have been more up your alley with a 36t chain ring

Maybe on the high end cause that would get me really close to what I am currently running in terms of top end.

But then I sacrifice my climbing gear which goes from 1:0.666 up to 1:0.72.

Al lot of stuff is done to look cool or pro - shave legs, slam stems etc etc.

1x has an elemnent of that.

Gear ratio needed/used will vary from rider to rider, speed and terrain. My local enduro trail park has a climb with 16% ave gradient (peak of 20%) over 500m. I ride it without hassle on my XC bike with a 1x11 36-42 gear. I work much harder on the enduro bike, and it has 1x12 34-50. What does it say about me as a rider that I need a 34-50 to ride up there? Fact is that I dont care, I enjoy the bike like that.

Imo the only real advantage of 1x is chain retention - can fit a chain keeper on a 1x - I have managed to bounced the chain off once before.

We also like our dropper seat posts down here, which of course work even better with an under bar lever mounted where your front shifter sits.

This IMO is the only valid reason for 1 x

Avoiding handle bar clutter

But then again, having never used a dropper post (yet) it’s not a major issue. If I really need to lower my seat then I do it the old fashioned way.... QR seat post clamp.

Nope I don't think gravel bikes would have a good time riding the ultra marathon at Sabie. Some real big hits to be had out there that's for sure.

I'm not even sure handlebar clutter can qualify since standards such as matchmaker and I-spec came out. ????

I too have been on MTB's for 21 years now, and have dropped the chain a couple of times with a front der, or had poor shifting under adverse conditions....the drive train still worked and having a large chain ring for road sections is nice, but then again I very rarely do road sections anymore on the MTB.

For me a 1 x is more natural in the shifting dept, it also leaves a space where the front shifter would be under the bars for one of the best inventions ever, a lever for a dropper post.

Seriously though, you been MTB'ing for 34 years?

Ja

I like the umph on downhills and yes they are MTB rides.

On the Epic you just want to save your legs. The last thing you want to do is waste watts pushing down hill.

The top guys are told to ride 1X

that would be a waste...

Also the top guys aren't normal, Kulhavy had a 38 up front if i'm not mistaken!

Back on topic again!

It would be great to see a 12spd from the Big S!

Now is the XD tech patented, or can any company design a cassette around this design and implement their own free hub bodies based on this design?

The XD free hub body design just makes sense, if only it was more cost effective locally though.

The design of the XD driver

isn't patented as far as i know. Any hub manufacturer can supply you a freehub with XD driver or Shimano/10spd driver.

Shimano 12spd at SLX price level would be nice...

My XC bike's cockpit looks minimalist, the enduro bike on the other hand has a dropper cable and shock lockout on the bar.

I dont mind the wires, bit there are things like etap, & wireless droppers to try.

One Up components mini-freehub which they use to convert Shimano cassettes to a 10t low is not patented. They claim it is open source? So maybe Shimano is using that?

now that would be awesome .... especially if they can come in at the SLX pricing range!

Most extreme event? Erm... take a gander at Swiss Epic and Tour Divide...

By dominated the Epic are you saying that there were more 1x Group sets than 2x Group sets or that the winner was on a 1x?

For me I wont go 12 speed until they sort out that stupid 8 tooth jump from 42 to 50... you lose your momentum and traction. It sucks. The ratios need refinement.  It is effectively an 11 speed cassette with a 50 slapped on for marketing reasons. They had to squish everything closer as well which has lead to other issues.

I hope that Shimano is taking a long hard look at all of this and is planning to sort it out.
